Nevada Las Vegas will introduce Notre Dame assistant coach Jim Strong as its football coach at a news conference today. Strong was selected over Cal State Fullerton's Gene Murphy and four other finalists. "We think he'll do an outstanding job," Athletic Director Brad Rothermel said Friday. "He comes from a phenomenal program. He's an excellent recruiter, a tireless worker, and he has the ability to get the public excited." Strong, 35, has coached the backfield at Notre Dame the last two seasons.

Nevada Las Vegas officials have denied a published report that football coach Jim Strong would be relieved of his duties. "We hope that this announcement will serve to end all speculation and enable all efforts in the football department to be directed toward recruiting and the future development of the program," UNLV Athletic Director Jim Weaver said in a statement.

Notre Dame offensive coordinator Jim Strong has been named the football coach at Nevada-Las Vegas, a source reported today. A source who asked not to be identified confirmed that Strong had been given the job. He is expected to receive a five-year contract at a reported $95,000 annually. Strong is scheduled to be introduced at a news conference Saturday. Strong and Cal State-Fullerton coach Gene Murphy were reported to be the two finalists for the post.

Cal State Fullerton will attempt to end a four-game losing streak when it plays Nevada Las Vegas tonight at 7 in a Big West Conference game. The Titans (1-4) are coming off a 38-3 defeat by Fresno State in which they lost their best defensive player, linebacker Clarence Siler, with knee and ankle injuries. Fullerton, playing its fifth consecutive road game, is led by quarterback Paul Schulte, who has completed 61 of 127 passes for 991 yards and four touchdowns.

Nevada Las Vegas, which hopes to name its new football coach by the end of the week, had its field of candidates drop from seven to six Monday. Artie Gigantino, special teams coach for the Rams, was interviewed Monday by the 17-member committee. Jim Strong, offensive coordinator at Notre Dame, is scheduled to be interviewed today with Cal State Fullerton Coach Gene Murphy set for Wednesday.
