As a safety tandem, USC's Mark Carrier and Cleveland Colter work together as teammates. In a sense, though, they are competing against one another. Both have been nominated for the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the nation's best collegiate defensive back. Their skills are so comparable that you can't mention one without referring to the other. They are usually interviewed as an entry, as they were recently.

Miami Dolphins Coach Don Shula will be given an award for career achievement at the third annual Jim Thorpe Pro Sports Awards, which ABC will broadcast July 11 from Los Angeles. Wayne Gretzky of the Los Angeles Kings has been designated as the recipient of the Thorpe legacy award.

Eric Turner, UCLA's senior free safety, is one of 15 finalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the best defensive back in college football. Turner had a season-high 15 tackles in last Saturday's game against Oregon at Eugene. He leads the Bruins in tackles with 80, 22 more than any other player on the team. "Eric is far and away having his best year," Coach Terry Donahue said. "Also, he and (center) Lance Zeno have been two of our better captains and have provided outstanding leadership."

Twenty-nine college football players have been nominated for the second annual Jim Thorpe award to be presented to the best defensive back in college football on Jan. 19. The award is presented by the Jim Thorpe Club in Oklahoma. Nominations for the award are made by coaches, sports information directors, pro scouts and newsmen. A panel of national sports writers and sportscasters will select 10 finalists and a committee of formers players, coaches and media will select the winner.
