Nevada Las Vegas Athletic Director Jim Weaver denied reports that he planned to suspend basketball player J.R. Rider because of the player's arrest last week on obstruction of justice charges.

The Department of Energy deliberately distorted a scientific report to make two of its three proposed nuclear waste sites look better than was justified, two House subcommittee chairmen charged. Reps. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and Jim Weaver (D-Ore.), in a letter to John S. Herrington, secretary of Energy, said that their staffs discovered that department documents "reveal that DOE systematically deleted unfavorable information concerning the desirability of the Hanford, Wash.

Army Coach Bob Sutton was given a three-year contract extension through the 2000 season. Army won its first nine games before losing to Syracuse on Saturday. Sutton's six-year record is 33-31-1. * Western Michigan Coach Al Molde was fired after 10 seasons. Molde's position appeared in jeopardy since mid-October, when Athletic Director Jim Weaver asked him to consider taking another job in the department. When the news leaked, players and team boosters rushed to the coach's defense.

Right-hander Bert Blyleven was reacquired by Minnesota in a waiver deal with the Cleveland Indians and will report to the Twins tonight at Anaheim Stadium, where they play the Angels. Blyleven, who is under contract through next year, was purchased for the waiver price of $20,000, Twin spokesman Tom Mee said. Also, the Twins sold pitcher Curt Wardle, outfielder Jim Weaver and infielder Jay Bell, to the Indians for $20,000, Mee said.
