Jim Wren is considered the best punter in the country, and he's eager to put his uncharacteristically inconsistent first game behind. "I just need a big game this week or it will drive me crazy," said Wren, who had two 53-yard punts against Florida State but three of 35 yards or less. "I got about eight minutes' sleep that night," Wren said. "I don't know what happened. I watched the film about 50 times. It was just one little thing every time. I was trying so hard to do it right.

Jeff Clayton of Orange Coast and Jim Wren of Fullerton, All-Mission Conference players, signed with four-year colleges Wednesday. Clayton, a running back from Trabuco Hills High, is going to Texas. Wren, a punter from Esperanza High, will attend USC. Clayton set the OCC career rushing mark with 2,507 yards in 21 games. He gained 1,442 yards and was a J.C. Grid-Wire All-American as a freshman. He had 1,065 yards last season. Wren averaged 42.

As bad as the Trojans have been, the team has at least one effective performer, punter Jim Wren. The junior college transfer from Fullerton punted 10 times in the 21-10 loss to Washington Saturday, averaging 40.5 yards. He ranks first in the conference--USC's only statistical leader in any category--with a 45.6-yard average, and is ninth in the NCAA. The USC single-season punt record is 44.6, set in 1953 by Des Koch.

The question was put to senior tight end John Allred: How can USC possibly generate any fire to play Notre Dame on Saturday after the 48-41 overtime loss to UCLA last Saturday? "It's just time to stand up and be men," he said. "It's tough, but it's another huge game for us. There's a lot riding on it, especially the seniors. "The UCLA loss, with me . . . it's still sinking in. Some of the guys have the feeling that there's some kind of curse on us in that game.

Dahrin Footman ran for two touchdowns, and Kareen Clark returned an interception 93 yards for another as Esperanza stayed unbeaten with a 31-0 victory over Cypress in the Empire League opener for both teams. The top-ranked Aztecs (6-0, 1-0 in league) have shut out five of their six opponents this season and allowed only 14 points. Esperanza led, 10-0, at halftime after Footman's 18-yard run and a 27-yard Jim Wren field goal.

USC's coaching staff is working through the uncertainty surrounding Coach John Robinson's future, continuing to recruit while Athletic Director Mike Garrett completes an evaluation that could take a week or more. "That's the first question: Are you going to be there? Is Coach Robinson going to be there?" defensive coordinator Keith Burns said. Garrett said Monday he's "not going to say much during the process," and people around Heritage Hall are more uncertain than ever what to expect.

The USC-Oregon State game won't be available on live TV even via satellite Saturday, but Fox Sports West 2 has added a special 10:30 p.m. Saturday replay of the game--the first USC game not televised live since 1988. The replay will also be shown at 5 p.m. Sunday on Fox Sports West 2 as previously scheduled. Also, the kickoff time for the USC-UCLA game Nov.
