An Atlantic Coast Conference team will play in the Emerald Bowl because the Pacific 10 does not have enough eligible teams to fill the slot. John Swofford, ACC commissioner, and Gary Cavalli, executive director of the bowl game, said Sunday that the league will place one of its teams against Utah in the Dec. 29 game in San Francisco. Cavalli said earlier that he expected an ACC team to play in the bowl, which was supposed to pair a Mountain West Conference team against a Pac-10 opponent.

No matter who is UCLA's starting quarterback in the fall, the key to the passing attack will be the play of its mostly unproven receivers. With Craig Bragg and Tab Perry graduated, UCLA's most experienced wideout is senior Junior Taylor, who finished with 32 catches for 463 yards last season. In Saturday's scrimmage at Drake Stadium, quarterbacks completed five touchdown passes, but none were to a wideout.

The ankle injury that has hobbled senior linebacker Justin London the last couple of weeks has given UCLA a sneak preview of freshman John Hale, who appears to possess a bright future at the position. It's been a quick ascent for Hale, who earned his first college start against Oklahoma on Sept. 17 at outside linebacker, where he remained for four games. UCLA defensive coordinator Larry Kerr moved Hale to inside linebacker against Oregon State on Oct.

I did not meet anyone like Jimmy Stephens during my journey through Iraq in 2003. But I don't doubt that the sharply carved protagonist of "Last One In," a down-on-his-luck New York gossip columnist with a taste for velvet jackets and sushi from Nobu, lurked somewhere among the hundreds of often wide-eyed and ill-prepared journalists sent to cover the American-led invasion. This invasion was perhaps the first to invite everybody to the show, and few declined.

They rested under what shade they could find, weary from a week's fishing under a blazing sun in the bountiful Midriff section of the Sea of Cortez. Partially packed, they were ready to go home. Then came the cry: "Yellowtail on the beach!" A large school had moved in to feed not more than 40 yards from shore. Gulls and terns dove for the small fish the yellowtail had chased to the surface.
