With so much of the media's attention keyed on the rap explosion of the past few years, it's easy to overlook the fact that R&B has lately experienced a singing renaissance. Artists who learned their lessons from the great R&B vocalists of the '70s, then absorbed the best hip-hop of the late '80s, have achieved a virtual chart monopoly in the late '90s with their lavishly produced dance-soul hybrids.

Yet K-Ci and JoJo Hailey, who are also members of the R&B quartet Jodeci, managed to escape that pitfall last year when their debut package, "Love Always," was released to a lukewarm response.

As members of Jodeci, K-Ci and JoJo Hailey primarily stuck to well-trod terrain: faithless sweethearts, dashed romantic hopes, the inevitable goodbyes. On their second project on their own, the brothers still sound like graduates from the Bobby Womack School of Wounded Lovers. "Fee Fie Foe Fum" is an angry, finger-pointing accusation aimed at a creepin' honey, and K-Ci & JoJo handle it like true, old-school soul shouters. The rest of the album isn't so invigorating.
