Joan Braden has led three lives. A key aide on both Kennedy presidential bids, she served as a consumer adviser to the U.S. State Department while sustaining a 41-year marriage to commentator Tom Braden and raising eight children--the family portrayed in the book and television series "Eight Is Enough." Her new book, "Just Enough Rope" (Villard: $19.95), chronicles her life, including her friendships with such notables as Nelson Rockefeller, J.F.K., R.F.K.

What better way to introduce a new French Champagne than with a series of parties. The Marquis and Marquise d'Aulan (Francois and Sonia to their many friends) were doing just that as they made their way from New York to Los Angeles. The new bubbly, called Piper Rare (the d'Aulans own Piper Heidsieck in France's Champagne district), comes in a bottle that is a copy of the one Faberge, the jeweler, designed for the great-grandfather of the marquis.

One hundred Washington luminaries clad in tuxedos and shimmering evening gowns finished their supper. A marble-top table was cleared of flowers and candelabras, making room for the singing belly dancer. The ambassador leaped up to join her, doffing his tie, unbuttoning his shirt to the waist, and soon he was leading a conga line of the nation's elite through the embassy halls.
