When he stalks onstage at sold-out stadium shows, bare-chested and in a black skirt, young girls scream and faint. Women in Porsches follow him through the streets in foreign cities. He has shocked the press and the cultural elite of his native Spain with his unorthodox moves and provocative statements. His manager is a veteran promoter of the likes of Madonna, Prince and Michael Jackson. Is he the latest European rock star? Not exactly.

Supermodel Naomi Campbell was recovering in a Canary Islands hospital Sunday after taking an overdose of barbiturates, a hospital spokeswoman said. The 27-year-old model was taken to a hospital emergency room shortly after a heated late-night argument with her boyfriend, Spanish flamenco dancer Joaquin Cortes, the Spanish news agency EFE reported. Hotel guests complained of loud noises coming from her room. Our Lady of the Pines Hospital officials said Campbell was in stable condition.

The Royal Spanish National Ballet opened a five-day run Tuesday at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa, showcasing principals who were not reviewed during the company's appearances last week in Los Angeles. In the title role of Jose Granero's "Medea," Ana Gonzalez seemed bound within all-too-human dimensions and evoked nothing more tragic than a Spanish version of "Cavalleria Rusticana."

To see "Flamenco" is to be swept up in a performance dream, to experience a vibrant musical tradition as filtered through Spain's top director and one of the world's preeminent cinematographers. If you're not an aficionado when you go, you might be persuaded to become one by the time you leave. Veteran director Carlos Saura, with more than 30 films to his credit, has dealt expertly with performance before in, among others, "Carmen" and "Blood Wedding."

You might say that Joaquin Cortes does a dance formerly known as flamenco. At least he toys with the concept. A Gypsy by birth and a flamenco and ballet dancer by training, the 27-year-old Cortes has come up with his own version of "flamenco fusion." On Sunday night, his show "Gypsy Passion" came to the Universal Amphitheatre--one stop on a world tour of similarly large venues.

There was a duel going on Wednesday night during the performance of La Tania Music and Dance at the Irvine Barclay Theatre. It wasn't a contest between spirit and flesh or gripping and letting loose, which is often the case with flamenco. Nor was it the tension of tradition meeting innovation, although that's the flamenco trend this company wants to join.
