GLENDALE, Ariz. - Anthony LeBlanc believes the Phoenix area can be a sustainable hockey market, even though the many empty seats for the Coyotes' game against the Kings at Jobing.com Arena on Tuesday would seem a strong contradiction. LeBlanc is co-owner, president, chief executive and alternate governor of the Coyotes, a string of titles he assumed last summer when he and other investors banded together to purchase the franchise from the NHL for $170 million. He and fellow investor Daryl Jones had chased a deal to buy the Coyotes for four years but couldn't quite close it; with financier George Gosbee on board the IceArizona group completed the transaction in August.

Phoenix Coyotes goalie Mike Smith joined a most-select club on Saturday night with one second remaining in regulation against the Detroit Red Wings. Smith became the 11th goalie in NHL history to score a goal, an empty-netter. He launched a 190-foot wrist shot and managed to just beat the buzzer at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Ariz. That made the final score 5-2 against the Red Wings. "I knew there was not a lot of time left," said Smith in his TV interview on the bench.

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Among Kings Coach Darryl Sutter's strong points are his bluntness and willingness to call out players who are underperforming. On Tuesday night, after the Kings' 3-1 loss to Phoenix at Jobing.com Arena, Sutter gave an instant and pointed analysis of the Kings' penalty killing and of the 42 shots taken at Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith. Although the Kings did an excellent job to kill off several disadvantages in the first period, including a brief five-on-three Phoenix advantage, an offensive-zone penalty by Justin Williams led to the Coyotes' second goal, by Shane Doan at 19 minutes 54 seconds of the second period, 1:35 after Derek Morris' double deflection had ended a scoreless tie. GAME SUMMARY: Coyotes 3, Kings 1 "We didn't kill the one we had to," Sutter said.

The Ducks acquired center Matthew Lombardi from the Phoenix Coyotes for left wing Brandon McMillan on Wednesday, a deal completed shortly before the NHL's noon Pacific time trade deadline. The Kings made no trades on Wednesday. They made their big move on Monday when they acquired defenseman Robyn Regehr from the Buffalo Sabres for second-round draft picks in 2014 and 2015. Regehr passed the necessary medical exams and practiced with the Kings for the first time on Wednesday. They also traded spare defenseman Davis Drewiske to Montreal on Tuesday for a fifth-round pick in this year's draft.

Of all the changes made by the IceArizona group since it purchased the Phoenix Coyotes from the NHL in August, one seemingly small decision symbolizes the new regime. The Coyotes traditionally hold a dinner for players and their wives before the season, "to kind of set the tone," General Manager Don Maloney said. "And basically the last three years it's been Happy Meals and six-packs. The new owners took us out to a nice restaurant. Little things that you think don't mean much, but they mean a lot for the whole mind-set of your group.
