God and circumstance led Joclin Julmist to The Master's College. Hard work and determination turned him into one of the best rebounders among NAIA men's basketball players. In each of his four seasons at Master's, Julmist has ranked among the top five NAIA rebounders, leading the nation this season with a 14.5 average. The Freeport, Bahamas, native had no idea in high school that he'd play college basketball.

The Master's 98, Robert Morris 67--Joey Penberthy scored 26 points and Joclin Julmist had 11 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists for the Mustangs in a nonconference game at Master's. Reserve Jacy Armbruster scored 16 for Master's (5-8), which made 62.9% of its shots (39 of 62). WOMEN'S BASKETBALL The Master's 66, Fresno Pacific 62--Elizabeth Hansell had 22 points and 12 rebounds for the Mustangs in a nonconference victory at The Master's.

The Master's College withstood a second-half charge by Georgia Southwestern State and held on for an 84-75 upset over the fifth-seeded Hurricanes on Wednesday in the first round of the 62nd NAIA Division I men's basketball tournament at Reynolds Center. Unseeded Master's (22-12) led by 16 points in the first half before Georgia Southwestern rallied behind Ernest Scott, who scored 32 points.

Moorpark 67, Grossmont 48--Alofa Tuimoloau made four of six free throws and a three-point basket in a 21-point performance to help the Raiders (1-1) win at Moorpark. Polly Neves scored 25 points for Grossmont (0-6). Cuesta 80, Pierce 73--Carlyn Couch had 18 points and 14 rebounds for the Brahmas in a Western State Conference interdivision loss at Cuesta (2-3). Stephanie Taylor scored 17 points for Pierce (1-2).

The Master's men's basketball team (26-5) finished with the second-best record in school history behind the 1994-95 team, which was 27-4. The Mustangs, ranked No. 9 in the final NAIA poll, find out March 8 about their draw in the NAIA national tournament. Senior forward Joclin Julmist grabbed more than 17 rebounds per game over the final 12 to boost his nation-leading average to 14.5. His 1,530 career rebounds rank him No.

Jerome Joseph scored with 14 seconds remaining to lift The Master's College to a 75-74 victory over Fresno Pacific in a men's basketball game Tuesday night in Fresno. The Mustangs (4-4) trailed, 74-71, with 1:10 left after Charles Butcher scored four points in less than five seconds for the Sunbirds (3-4). Joclin Julmist scored with 45 seconds left to bring The Master's within one. After a miss by Jake Weathers, the Mustangs worked the ball inside to Joseph, who had 10 points.

How's this for a first-round opponent? The Master's College (23-11), making its fifth consecutive appearance in the NAIA Division I men's basketball championships, plays No. 8-seeded Oklahoma City (25-4) tonight at 6:45 at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla. Oklahoma City won titles in 1991, '92, '94 and '96. The Chiefs eliminated Master's, 108-85, in the second round in 1996. Master's best showing came in 1994, when the Mustangs lost in the quarterfinals.

Despite 32 points by Joey Penberthy, The Master's College had a 16-game winning streak snapped by Life University, 87-86, Monday at Marrieta, Ga. Life (21-1) is the defending NAIA champion and ranked No. 2 behind Oklahoma City. Master's (19-3), ranked No. 6, led at halftime, 43-40, but could not hold on despite limiting Life to 10 points under its average. Jimmy Hunter scored 39 points for Life on 14-of-25 shooting. Penberthy, a senior guard, made 12 of 22 shots, including four three-pointers.

Eric Horvat and Daniel Phillips each homered and drove in three runs for Cal State Northridge in an 8-4 nonconference victory over host UC Santa Barbara on Friday. Horvat had two hits and scored twice, and Phillips had three hits to help the Matadors (3-2) end a two-game losing streak. Tim Bell (2-0) struck out six and walked four in 5 2/3 innings for Northridge, allowing three runs and seven hits. Trevor Gray allowed one hit in 3 1/3 innings to earn his first save.

Jerome Joseph made two free throws with one second remaining to give The Master's College men's basketball team an 88-86 victory over Western Washington in the fifth-place game of the Cal Poly Pomona tournament Saturday. Joseph, a freshman point guard from Chatsworth High, had 13 points, three assists and three steals to help the Mustangs (8-4) to their fourth victory in five games. Mike Penberthy scored 30 points for Master's and Joclin Julmist had 13 points and 18 rebounds.
