As the new supervisor of the Angeles National Forest, Jody Cook controls more than a quarter of Los Angeles County's land and most of its open space. Still, the 39-year-old engineer, who began her assignment Aug. 14., is just learning the layout of the 656,000-acre, fractured swath of earth that separates the Los Angeles Basin from the desert. In some ways, the San Gabriel Mountains are a world apart from where she came--the larger, more rural Plumas National Forest north of Lake Tahoe.

The Balboa Bay Volleyball Club won all three of its matches Friday to advance in the Sandcastle Classic International tournament in White Rock, Canada. In the first match against Team Santa Cruz, Jeremy Bart had 14 kills, eight blocks and teammate Jody Cook-Fisher had eight kills and eight digs in the 15-7, 15-4 victory. Matt Wright had 36 assists for Balboa Bay. Curtis Jackson had 10 kills and eight digs to lead Balboa in the second match, against a British Columbia team from Port Moody.

Valencia 3, Servite 2--Kevin Allen had 19 kills and 13 blocks and teammate Matt Geissman added six aces and 51 assists for Valencia (6-4), which won, 14-16, 15-12, 15-3, 10-15, 15-7. Huntington Beach 3, Calvary Chapel 0--Jody Cook-Fisher had 10 kills for host Huntington Beach (6-0), which won, 15-4, 15-8, 22-20.

After San Clemente won the first two games, Huntington Beach rallied to win, 13-15, 9-15, 15-4, 16-14, 16-14, in a nonleague boys' volleyball match Wednesday at San Clemente High. Huntington Beach (5-0), the two-time defending Southern Section Division I champions, was led by returning starters Jeremy Bart, who had 29 kills, and Jody Cook-Fisher, who had 20. San Clemente (4-1) led, 12-4, in Game 4 before Huntington Beach rallied to send the match to a fifth game.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Rite Aid Corp. agreed Friday to pay penalties to settle federal lawsuits alleging that they submitted false prescription claims to government insurance programs. The Justice Department said Rite Aid, a drugstore chain operator based in Camp Hill, Pa., would pay the federal government $5.6 million and an additional $1.4 million to more than two dozen states.
