The Sparks removed the "interim" tag from the title of Coach Joe "Jellybean" Bryant. Bryant, a former NBA player and father of Laker star Kobe Bryant, agreed Monday to become the seventh coach in franchise history. Terms were not announced, but it is believed to be a two-year deal. "Joe has shown to me an incredible desire to coach," Spark President Johnny Buss said. "He has the passion for competition I look for." Bryant began last season as an assistant under former coach Henry Bibby.

Kobe Bryant was presented with an official jersey from the Italian national basketball team after the Lakers' 102-84 victory over the Utah Jazz at Staples Center. Giancarlo Migliola, press officer of the Italian Federation (link in Italian), gave Bryant the jersey after the game.  The No. 18 didn't have specific significance but it read "Kobe" on the back. Bryant spent many of his formative years in Italy as his father, Joe Bryant, played overseas. The Lakers All-Star guard could be heard yelling, "Forza, Italia!"

The Sparks have fired Jennifer Gillom as coach and replaced her with assistant coach Joe Bryant, the team announced Sunday. The coaching change was made after the Sparks fell to fifth place in the six-team Western Conference with a record of 4-6. They have lost five games in a row, their worst skid since 2007. Three of those losses have come after 2008 WNBA most valuable player Candace Parker suffered a knee injury in a June 26 game; she is expected to be out about six weeks. Parker played in just 10 games last season after needing surgery on a dislocated left shoulder.

After missing the playoffs last season for only the fourth time in 15 years, the Sparks made a coaching change, hiring Carol Ross to replace Joe Bryant, the team announced Thursday. Ross was an assistant with Atlanta for three years, helping the Dream to the WNBA Finals the last two seasons. The Sparks finished with a record of 15-19 last season, when Bryant replaced Jennifer Gillom as coach after a 4-6 start. Bryant's contract expired at the end of the season. "It hurts when you underachieve, but anyone in sports knows it can happen," Sparks General Manager Penny Toler said.

Swish. It's roughly 20 minutes since the Sparks ended their practice. Swish. Coach Joe Bryant is still out on the floor, shirt and shorts drenched, sweat glistening on his shaved head. Swish. But he's not running a team drill or training a prospect. "Jellybean," a nickname given to him by high school friend Mo Howard because Bryant loved the multicolored candies and danced "like jelly shaking in a bowl," is pumping out jumpers -- 15 feet, 18 feet, three-pointers.

Arrivederci, Kobe? Kobe Bryant took another step toward Italy while in Milan, if that's possible, saying it was "very possible" he would play in the Italian pro league during the NBA lockout. "It would be a dream for me," Bryant told the Gazzetta dello Sport while making a promotional appearance Wednesday for Nike. "There's an opportunity that we've been discussing over the last few days. It's very possible, and that's good news for me. " Bryant would earn $2.5 million for 10 games with Virtus Bologna from Oct. 9 to Nov. 16, according to the Associated Press.

Sunday, you had a front-page story on Joe Bryant, who coaches the Sparks. That night, Lisa Leslie scored 41 points and became the first woman in WNBA history to score 5,000 points, the Sparks won their eighth game in a row ... and The Times buried the story on the ninth page. It would be nice if The Times would give Lisa Leslie and the Sparks the respect they deserve. TERRI K. TAYLOR Westminster

Joe Bryant is going to drag his spry 6-foot-9 frame out of a one-bedroom apartment he shares with his wife near downtown Los Angeles, head down the stairs to the full-length basketball court on the second floor and start shooting. He has to make 120 shots, 60 on each end: 20 from the left side, 20 from the right, 20 down the middle. This few-times-a-week workout keeps the jovial Bryant fresh. It proves to him that he can still play this game at 56. But after 120 made he's gone, because he doesn't want you to spot him, notice he's tall, ask if he played ball, then find out who he really is. Kobe Bryant's father.

It was Joe Bryant's first loss since returning as head coach one week ago. And it was the Sparks' first loss at Staples Center this season. But the most painful part for the Sparks was that it happened during the greatest second-half comeback in WNBA history. The Washington Mystics rallied from a 24-point deficit and beat the Sparks in overtime, 89-85, Sunday night. In the locker room after the game, the players hung their heads and sat in silence. When prodded, Tina Thompson said she was disappointed "beyond words.

Earlier this week, Seattle Coach Anne Donovan praised Sparks Coach Joe Bryant for leading his team to the WNBA's second-best record. "I give a lot of credit to Joe Bryant," she said. "He has done a great job in giving them the right roles. That starts with [Chamique] Holdsclaw coming off the bench, and really embracing that role, and doing great off the bench for them. But it just seems to be a more balanced, focused, not-so-erratic team." So much for the niceties.
