It's hard to know if Escondido boxing manager Joe Crowder is doing his best Don King imitation or if he truly believes his own hype. Whatever his purpose, Crowder is giving junior lightweight Jorge Martinez quite a buildup before his pro debut tonight in an undercard fight at the Irvine Marriott. "I think Jorge is going to be a better fighter than Julio Cesar Chavez," Crowder said. "He might not have the power that Chavez possessed, but he's a better defensive fighter.

Oxnard flyweight Carlos Madrigal came off a 13-month layoff with the best performance of his career, an electrifying first-round knockout of Los Angeles' Pedro Pena. A record Thursday night boxing crowd of 4,218 watched at the Arrowhead Pond. Pena (18-3), the No. 2-ranked flyweight in the world last year, appeared in control early in the round as he had Madrigal (15-2, 10 knockouts) on the ropes. But Madrigal turned Pena around and unleashed a flurry of unanswered blows for some 30 seconds.

Joe Pastorello will be representing the United States in the Pan American Games this summer as a member of the boxing team. But this wasn't the likely scenario six years ago. Back then, Pastorello seemed more interested in self-destruction than self-respect or self-advancement. Pastorello, a Times All-Orange County linebacker and state wrestling champion at Katella High, had a nice career going at the Air Force Academy.
