The garish green-gold neon uniforms stayed behind when Joe Harrington left Cal State Long Beach for Colorado after the 1990 basketball season. So far, the shade Long Beach calls California Gold hasn't been mined as Colorado Gold in Boulder. Harrington left behind the technical fouls, too. The foot-stomping temper that once earned him four technicals in two games at Long Beach has been quieted.

Joe Harrington resigned Tuesday as Colorado basketball coach after failing to bring the school to the national prominence that he had in his previous stint at Long Beach State. Harrington, in the his sixth season at Colorado, announced he was quitting before an 82-80 home-court loss in overtime to Southern Utah. Harrington said it was better to leave now so someone else could take over the Buffaloes (5-9).

Joe Harrington, Cal State Long Beach men's basketball coach, was reprimanded by the PCAA for his actions in the Feb. 10 game at Fresno State. The 49ers forfeited the contest after Harrington failed to leave the court when he was ejected.

Cal State Long Beach's victory at Kansas on Monday night was its most stunning upset on the road since March 3, 1988, when the 49ers defeated Nevada Las Vegas, 79-77. In that game, which shocked a crowd of 18,310 at the Thomas and Mack Center, Morlon Wiley made two free throws with one second left to beat the Runnin' Rebels, who were ranked No. 5 in the country at the time. Other stars for the 49ers that night were Rigo Moore, Andre Purry, DeAnthony Langston and Billy Walker.

After spending 12 years in various jobs as an assistant basketball coach, Seth Greenberg's dream of becoming a head coach came true Thursday when he was named to succeed Joe Harrington at Cal State Long Beach. "There's always been a driving force inside me to be a head coach," the 33-year-old Greenberg said before a news conference in Long Beach. "I don't remember a time in my adult life when I didn't want to be one."

"For a chance to coach in the Big Eight, a great basketball conference, and because Colorado reminds me of where I went to school, at the University of Maryland." Harrington, 44, who went to Long Beach from George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.

Joe Harrington on Thursday confirmed reports that Cleveland High basketball Coach Bob Braswell has been interviewed for an assistant coaching position on his staff at Cal State Long Beach. Harrington, 43, the Long Beach coach for the past two years, said Braswell is the leading candidate for the job, which opened when assistant Butch Carter accepted a similar position at Dayton University earlier this year. "He's probably the guy I'm going to recommend we hire," Harrington said of Braswell.

Near the top of the world because of his new job as basketball coach at the University of Colorado, Joe Harrington made a nostalgic descent this week back to Cal State Long Beach and realized how hard it can be to let go. "It's sad coming back. I really liked Long Beach and the people here," Harrington said Tuesday morning as he gathered his belongings in his former office. "I enjoyed my three years here more than at any place I've coached."
