Steven SODERBERGH'S adventure in post-reality television, "K Street," was my must-see TV this season. Brainy, beautifully shot, consistently funny and audacious in its disregard for narrative convention, this HBO show about the power elite in Washington was among the very best and most misunderstood cultural achievements of the year. Using headline news as its launch point, "K Street" deftly examined how politics and entertainment have become, in many discomfiting respects, indistinguishable.

About 200 police officers raided 18 homes in four cities early Thursday looking for a gang member believed to have been involved in a fatal shooting at a Fullerton party last month. The subject of the search was Amit Aguilar Frias, 17, a Santa Ana resident also known as "Emmit" and "Stranger," authorities said. Another gang member--Victor Salgado, 19, of Santa Ana--already has been arrested and charged with murder in the case, said Joe Klein, a spokesman for the Fullerton Police Department.

In unrelated incidents Thursday, two people tried to kill themselves by standing in front of oncoming vehicles, authorities said. Both people survived the suicide attempts, which followed the death of a Huntington Park woman early Tuesday after she walked into traffic on the Santa Ana Freeway. In the first of Thursday's incidents, police said a 65-year-old transient stood in the path of an oncoming freight train in Fullerton and was struck about 3:30 a.m.

A 13-year-old Fullerton boy wearing stereo headphones and walking on the railroad tracks was struck by a MetroLink train Monday, but suffered only a fractured leg, police said. The boy, whose name was not released because of his age, managed to leap away at the last moment, but the train hit his leg, Fullerton Police Sgt. Joe Klein said. "He was very, very fortunate," he said. "He was able to get out of the way at the last possible second."

Darryl Strawberry isn't getting any help from the Detroit Tigers in his bid to make it back to the majors. Strawberry was intentionally walked every time he came to the plate--five in all--in Friday's game between the New York Yankees' and Tigers' teams in the rookie Gulf Coast League. Detroit General Manager Joe Klein admitted he gave the order to walk Strawberry each time he batted.

Two county teen-agers led police Friday on a car chase that ended near Barstow after authorities laid down a strip of spikes that punctured the tires of their stolen automobile. The driver, a 15-year-old Anaheim boy, and a 17-year-old Santa Ana girl were arrested on suspicion of possessing a stolen vehicle and evading police officers. They were held in San Bernardino County Juvenile Hall. "The potential for an accident was great because the driver was all over the freeway," said Sgt.
