DETROIT -- Greetings from Detroit, where it's snowing lightly. The Kings' morning skate at Joe Louis Arena was optional, but it appeared that their lineup Saturday against the Red Wings will be the same as it was in their 4-1 victory over St. Louis on Thursday. Forwards Tanner Pearson and Linden Vey remained on the ice with goaltender Martin Jones for extra work, a sign they'll be scratched. Coach Darryl Sutter left the arena without speaking to the media. It was a jolt to walk into the Red Wings' locker room and see many unfamiliar names affixed to the stalls.

DETROIT - Defenseman Jake Muzzin's emotions swung quickly Thursday from exhilaration to exasperation. The 24-year-old scored the Kings' first goal against St. Louis - his first point in 15 games - but was responsible for the Blues' equalizer after his shot on goal was blocked and turned into a breakaway for T.J. Oshie. Muzzin impeded Oshie, who was awarded a penalty shot and scored. "Stuff's going to happen. There's no sense dwelling on it or letting it affect the rest of your game," he said Friday after the Kings practiced at Joe Louis Arena.

Paul Kariya's first game at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim since he left the Mighty Ducks as a free agent last summer was the perfect occasion for fans to vent 51 games' worth of frustration. Fans booed the Colorado Avalanche's team bus when it pulled into the parking lot Friday. They booed Kariya when he skated toward the bench during warmups. They booed Kariya and Teemu Selanne each time either winger touched the puck during the game.

DETROIT -- Joe Louis Arena isn't the haunted house in which the Ducks have spent many a torturous night. They've got four wins against the Detroit Red Wings in their last five playoff games there, and since the perennially strong Red Wings can't sell out any home playoff games, much less their season opener Wednesday night, the Ducks might as well feel downright comfortable in what were once hostile surroundings. Not so fast.

The hockey world was in shock when eighth-seeded Vancouver took a 2-0 lead over Detroit in their best-of-seven Western Conference quarterfinal series. Watching the Canucks win consecutive games at Joe Louis Arena was especially tough on Red Wing fans, who booed or jeered Scotty Bowman's team throughout the last period of Detroit's 5-2 Game 2 loss last week. Detroit's fans shouldn't be so fickle. The Red Wings won this season's President's Trophy because they were the league's best team.

The Red Wings can put away their brooms because they will not be sweeping anything in this year's Stanley Cup finals. Carolina captain Ron Francis scored 58 seconds into overtime to give the underdog Hurricanes a 3-2 victory over the Red Wings on Tuesday in Game 1 of their best-of-seven series.
