Re "Governor of N.Y. linked to call girl," March 11 If and when every politician has the dignity to resign because of conduct that has been deemed as unbecoming of his public office, then New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer should follow their lead. Idaho Sen. Larry Craig and Louisiana Sen. David Vitter, to name a few, should show Spitzer how it's done. Joe Martinez El Segundo It is unlikely that I will become a public figure, be linked to a prostitution ring or hold a news conference.

Friends and relatives of Joe Dominguez Martinez, who died Christmas Day after a yearlong struggle with congestive heart problems, hope to name the new indoor swimming pool at the El Sereno Recreation Center after him. Martinez, 79, who was active in local youth activities with his wife, Marina, had worked as a community representative at El Sereno Junior High School for 18 years and was a Pop Warner football coach while his sons were growing up.

A man who killed a convenience store clerk was executed Wednesday despite an extraordinary plea by the victim's mother to commute the sentence. Johnny Joe Martinez blamed his lawyers for failing to get him off death row. Appeals this week were rejected. Martinez apologized to the parents of the slain clerk, Clay Peterson. Peterson's mother, Lana Norris, lobbied for his sentence to be reduced to a life term.

I want to thank Dan Issel for reminding me that there are still people out there who think the way he does. I used his display as an example to my children of unacceptable behavior. At this time when we "Americans" are pulling together to help heal our wounds, it is sad to hear his hateful words. I don't think the punishment justifies his actions. Happy holidays, Mr. Issel. In other Channel League games: Rio Mesa 21, Santa Barbara 7--Joe Martinez, a 5-foot-9, 140-pound defensive back, intercepted two passes, returning one 87 yards for a touchdown to boost Rio Mesa (3-3, 1-2) at Santa Barbara. Martinez's first interception set up a four-yard touchdown run by quarterback Paul Ayala in the second quarter that opened the scoring. The scoring interception return came in the third quarter and made the score 14-0.
