SAN DIEGO--United States International University hockey coach Brad Buetow announced Thursday the signings of two Minnesota high school hockey standouts, two former minor league players and four junior transfers. Mark Osicki from Burnsville (Minn.) High School was an all-state player last season and twice played on state championship teams. The other freshman, Shjon Podein, is an all-conference center from Rochester, Minn.

Matt Lundgren calls it being in the right place at the right time. This last time, that simple description will be allowed. Lundgren happened to be in front of a puck that skipped off the shoulder of teammate Jim Hau. Lundgren's only move was to slap the puck 10 feet in front of him, past Mike Carr in goal with 3:49 left, to lift United States International University to a 3-2 hockey victory over the University of Alaska Fairbanks at the San Diego Ice Arena Wednesday night.

Officials of McDonald Investment Co. Inc. of Birmingham, Ala. began eyeing Ventura County in June. In particular they liked the business opportunities they saw in the local radio market. It didn't take long for them to act on their feelings. In August, the company purchased Ventura news station KVEN-AM (1450) and its sister country music station KHAY-FM (101). And earlier this month, McDonald Investment announced an agreement to buy KBBY-FM (95.1).

Brent Mowery scored two goals just seven seconds apart midway through the second period Saturday night to snap a 2-2 tie, and United States International University went on to a 7-2 victory over St. Mary's College of Minnesota in a nonconference ice hockey game at the San Diego Ice Arena. Joe Schwartz and Blake Jurgens each scored twice for USIU (15-11), which scored three times in the third period to put the game away. St. Mary's fell to 11-6-1.

How could it be that they always said the cool thing? And the funny thing? And how to repay them for playing the music that moved me so? Well, that was long ago.
