A natural gas cooking stove left on for heating purposes was blamed by authorities for a fire that destroyed a mobile home at Porterville, killing a woman and her two sons. Tulare County Sheriff's Deputy Joe Teller said the bodies were found in the living room when he arrived at the scene shortly after the fire was reported. The victims were Sherri Lynn Lawson, 27; Ricky Lawson Jr., 8, and Shaw A. Lawson, 7.

Two Tulare County sheriff's deputies were shot and wounded and a deputy marshal was injured while serving a warrant Thursday, and the suspected gunman was shot and killed, authorities said. The suspect, Ronald Marain, 54, died at the scene. The two deputies and the Porterville Municipal Court marshal were fired upon at 5:30 p.m. as they tried to serve a warrant on Marain--for driving without a valid license--at a house in Strathmore, said Sheriff's Lt. Ray Lovelady.
