This cross-country season has already marked the coming of age of Joel Orozco. The soft-spoken junior from Santa Ana Valley High has taken the county by storm in the first two weeks of the season, winning the Laguna Hills Invitational, then racing to the county's third-fastest time at the Woodbridge Invitational, where he was beaten by a pair of pretty formidable seniors--Orange's Jaime Martinez and Katella's Mike Moreno.

Capistrano Valley's Adalberto Sanchez will be the cross-country runner to beat during Saturday's Orange County Championships at Irvine Regional Park, but the boys' competition figures to be highlighted by another matchup between Katella and Santa Ana. Katella, ranked No. 1 in the county, will try to regain the meet's Division I title, which it lost last year to Santa Ana. The Knights defeated the No. 2 Saints, 69-75, last weekend at the Central Park Invitational.

The Salsa, battling for first place in the APSL, Friday announced the signing of midfielder Hugo Perez, a member of the U.S. World Cup team. Perez, 30, played in the U.S. team's 2-0 loss to England on Wednesday in London. Perez will be on loan from the U.S. Soccer Federation through Oct. 15, the date of the APSL championship game. The Salsa plays host to Seattle at 6 p.m. Sunday at Cal State Fullerton.

Many of the top high school runners in the county will compete today in the 16th Foot Locker Cross-Country Championships West Regional at Fresno's Woodward Park, site of last Saturday's State finals. Freshman Heather Garritson, the State Division III champion from Buena Park High, will participate in her first Foot Locker race. Her sister, Carrie Garritson, who is now at Alabama, is the only prep runner to have competed in four Foot Locker finals.

Kim Nelson of Canyon and Jaime Martinez of Orange each won individual titles and led their teams to titles on Saturday in the Century League cross-country meet at Yorba Regional Park. Nelson, who won the league title for the fourth consecutive year, edged Santa Ana Valley's Eliaser Estrada by 11 seconds, winning in 17 minutes 32 seconds. For Nelson, the victory was a big relief.

Many of the area's finest cross-country programs will take aim at section titles as the Southern Section Championships begin at 8 a.m. Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College. The competition begins with the girls' Division I-A and I-AA races. Esperanza, ranked third in the final section coaches' poll and runner-up in the country championships this year, will try to avenge a section preliminary loss to ninth-ranked Irvine in theI-A race.

The Orange County cross-country championships Saturday morning at Irvine Regional Park will bring together more than 2,000 runners from nearly 50 schools. The featured competitions--the seeded races--will showcase the county's top boys' and girls' teams. The girls' race, which begins at 9 a.m., could result in the closest finish in the 27-year history of the event.

FEDERICO DURAN Santa Ana, Sr. Teamed with Juan Zaragoza to lead the top-ranked Saints to the Orange County and Sunset League titles. Finished fourth in the Southern Section Division I-AA final and crossed the finish line with three teammates to win the league final. * JAIME MARTINEZ Orange, Sr. Foot Locker National Qualifier for the second consecutive year, won the Century League title and finished first in the Orange County Championships.

For the second consecutive week, the El Toro girls' cross-country team used depth to outlast the competition, stealing the show Saturday at the Dana Hills Invitational. The Chargers, ranked second in the county, edged top-ranked Irvine, 63-73, to win the Division I junior/senior girls' race on the Dana Hills campus. Three Vaquero runners finished among the top four.
