Pope John Paul II named Dutch Cardinal Johannes Willebrands to be the prelate who will temporarily take charge of Vatican affairs in event of his death and make arrangements for the election of his successor. A Vatican statement said the 67-year-old pontiff appointed Willebrands, 78, to the position at a meeting of the Sacred College of Cardinals. He succeeds Cardinal Giuseppe Paupini, who became ineligible to vote for a new Pope when he turned 80 last year.
