John Bowerbank's addiction was a how-hard-can-I-hit-this style of tennis. Drop shots? Lobs? Cut backhands? No thanks, don't need 'em. For much of his junior tennis career, Bowerbank was right--he didn't need much more than his intense desire and ability to pound the ball across the net. On his way up through the 12-and-under, 14-and-under and 16-and-under divisions, Bowerbank was a consistently high-ranked player.

Though University was without its No. 1 singles player, the Trojans' boys' tennis team, ranked No. 4 in the Southern Section Division 4-A, defeated third-ranked Beverly Hills, 12-6, in a nonleague match Monday at University. John Bowerbank, the Trojans' No. 1 player who sprained his ankle Sunday in a junior tournament, wasn't able to play, but Ali Esna swept his singles sets and the Trojans won eight of nine doubles sets.

John Bowerbank, University's No. 2 singles player, defeated Beverly Hills' No. 1 player, Ravi Aysola, to give the Trojans a 10-8 victory in a nonleague boys' tennis match Monday at Beverly Hills. University (15-1) is ranked No. 3 in the Southern Section Division 4-A. Beverly Hills is No. 4. Bowerbank, the only University player to win all his sets, beat Aysola, 6-4, and won his other sets, 7-5, 6-4.

UC Irvine's Danny Vu defeated UC Santa Barbara's Simon Kurth by default to advance to today's main-draw singles in the Southern California Men's Tennis Regionals at UC Irvine. Teammate Khaled Husseini lost to Tim Truebenbach, of UC San Diego, 7-5, 6-2. Vu also advanced to the doubles main draw with partner Lars Mohn by defeating Santa Barbara's Joe Barberie and John Bowerbank, 8-4, in the qualifying doubles.

But thanks in part to the leadership of Lawson, the Cougars developed steadily and last week won a share of the league championship. When Dave Bain and John Bowerbank meet on the tennis court, they aren't two strangers exchanging passing shots. Bain, of Corona del Mar, and University's Bowerbank renewed their long-standing friendship and on-court rivalry in the Sea View League singles final Thursday at the Balboa Bay Racquet Club. In a match that featured no gimmicks from two of Orange County's top prep players, Bain defeated Bowerbank, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4, to win the championship.

La Quinta swept all doubles sets to defeat Esperanza, 11-7, in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section 3-A boys' tennis playoffs Tuesday at Esperanza. La Quinta took an 8-7 lead when its No. 3 doubles team of Loi Du and Khanh Ha won, 7-5, over Esperanza's No. 1 doubles team after trailing, 5-4. Du and Ha won their other two sets, 6-1, 6-3. Hien Ngo and Dung Doan swept, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1, in No. 1 singles for La Quinta (20-1). Mike Hammer swept, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, for Esperanza (21-1).

Bob Ray retired 17 consecutive batters at one point, but needed seventh-inning help from Mike Seal as Irvine defeated Mission Viejo, 3-1, in a South Coast League baseball game Monday at Irvine. From the final out in the first inning to the end of the sixth, Ray (5-0) retired every batter he faced for Irvine (10-4-1, 3-1-1). He allowed a single and a walk in the seventh before being relieved. Seal allowed a hit and struck out three to get the save.
