John Cyrus has resigned as boys' basketball coach at Anaheim Esperanza High for personal reasons, Athletic Director Jim Patterson said. Cyrus had been the Aztecs' coach for the last six seasons.

Valencia High School has hired John Cyrus as its boys' basketball coach. Cyrus, who teaches at Valencia and is a tennis coach at Fullerton College, replaces Ray Rodriguez, who resigned after 14 years as coach to become an assistant basketball coach at Rancho Santiago College. Cyrus, a Valencia graduate, has served in various coaching positions at the school, including girls' basketball coach, assistant boys' basketball coach and assistant football coach.

John Cyrus should have known it wasn't going to be his day. First off, the Valencia basketball coach fell off his bicycle and injured his left hand. And Cyrus had to watch as his Tigers (15-8) were eliminated in the first round of the Division II-A playoffs 60-48 by Manhattan Beach Mira Costa (19-7) Friday night at Valencia High School. "They (Mira Costa) came out and played powerful," said Cyrus.

El Dorado girls' tennis coach John Cyrus used football to motivate his team in its upset of No. 1-seeded Hemet Thursday in the Southern Section Division III semifinals. The match ended in a 9-9 tie, but the Golden Hawks, who lost in last year's semifinals to North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, won on games, 82-75.

If they were to visit an amusement park, the Esperanza boys' basketball players would no doubt choose to ride the biggest roller coaster they could find, over and over again. The Aztecs took another wild and somewhat painful ride Wednesday night, squandering a 14-point lead late in the third quarter and losing to Ocean View, the county's second-ranked team, 65-62, in a nonleague game at Esperanza. It was the 400th victory for Ocean View Coach Jim Harris, who is in his 22nd season.

BASKETBALL Lloyd Walls, a 6-8 center at Esperanza High, signed to play basketball at Loyola Marymount, according to Aztec Coach John Cyrus. Walls, a senior, blossomed during summer league play and is expected to be among the top big men in the county this season. VOLLEYBALL The UC Irvine men's volleyball team picked up two recruits this week. Kyle Martin, a 6-foot-5 outside hitter from El Toro High, has signed with the Anteaters, according to Bill Martin, his father.
