Cal State Fullerton Athletic Director John Easterbrook said Wednesday he will not be a candidate for Fresno State's vacant athletic director's position. Easterbrook said he was notified by the search committee seeking a replacement for Gary Cunningham that he was among those nominated for consideration. Easterbrook was associate athletic director under Cunningham at Fresno State for nine years before moving to Fullerton last year. Cunningham is now athletic director at UC Santa Barbara.

Cal State Fullerton President Milton Gordon said he was doing more than naming an athletic director Thursday when he introduced John Easterbrook as Bill Shumard's successor. "This isn't just a hiring, it's a message," Gordon said. "I'm sending a strong message to the athletic department that the athletic program is an integral part of our overall university program."

The Student Athletic Advisory Council to the Cal State Fullerton athletic department has voted to form a committee to study the feasibility of reinstating football at the school. Fullerton Athletic Director John Easterbrook confirmed the group's plans for the committee that would be made up of students, alumni and members of the community. "I'm always interested in looking into expansion of the department, so I'll welcome hearing about what the group learns," Easterbrook said.

A Cal State Fullerton search committee has selected six finalists for the vacant athletic director position, and a successor to Bill Shumard is expected to be named this month. The finalists include two associate athletic directors at California State universities, John Easterbrook of Fresno State and Reginald Blaylock of San Diego State.

Al Mistri signed a four-year contract as Cal State Fullerton men's soccer coach Friday, but will give up duties as coach of the women's team. Ali Khosroshahin, an assistant under Mistri for four years, has been named interim coach of the women's team. The school will conduct a search for a permanent women's coach in the fall. "Al has lifted the soccer programs to a point where it was impossible to give [his] full attention to both squads," Athletic Director John Easterbrook said.

Cal State Fullerton officials are scheduled to appear before the NCAA infractions committee Sept. 25 in Atlanta in the investigation of its men's basketball program. "We've agreed to not make any statement until the committee has released its findings," said Judith Anderson, university executive vice president.

Donny Daniels appeared Tuesday to move a step closer to becoming Cal State Fullerton men's basketball coach. Daniels, an assistant on Rick Majerus' staff at Utah for 11 years, met Tuesday with Athletic Director John Easterbrook and other university officials. Daniels, a former Titan player and assistant coach, is the only candidate who has been asked to return for additional meetings "at this time," athletic department spokesman Mel Franks said.
