Corona del Mar High has named John Emme its baseball coach, athletic director Jerry Jelnick said Wednesday. Emme, 33, who lives in Newport Beach, had recently been an assistant at Redondo Beach Redondo Union High for four years. Emme played high school baseball at La Canada St. Francis, then pitched at UC Davis for three years. He also coached high school in Underwood, Iowa, for three years. He replaces Joe Koh, who coached at Corona del Mar for three years before leaving.

The relationship between coach and parent can become perilous, leading to a roller coaster of emotions and recriminations. If something goes wrong, it's usually left to school administrators to come up with a solution, but a judge or jury are increasingly being used as the final arbiter in sports disputes. Corona del Mar Coach: John Emme 1999 record: 20-8 League record: 10-5 The Sea Kings will be young, with only two returning starters, but that hasn't kept Coach John Emme from predicting that his team will be competitive in its first season in the league after a move from the Sea View League. Third baseman David Beser, who hit .354 last season with two home runs and 20 RBIs, is the top returner. Center fielder Billy Eagle hit only .

Ninth-ranked Corona del Mar gave up 10 walks and committed four errors, three wild pitches and two balks that moved runners into scoring position Saturday. The result was an 8-3 loss to Salt Lake City Skyline in a first-round game at the Pride of the Coast tournament. Skyline scored single runs in the second through sixth innings and three in the seventh. "It was horrible and we stunk," Sea King Coach John Emme said. "We need to do some soul searching.

Corona del Mar took a giant step toward its first Sea View League championship in 18 years by defeating Irvine, 6-5, Friday. Ty Harper's second home run of the game, a solo shot to right in the bottom of the seventh inning, did more than just win the game for the surging Sea Kings (12-6, 8-3). It gave Corona del Mar a two-game lead on second-place Irvine (12-9, 6-5) with four league games to play.

Re "Coaches' Lineup Could Include a Lawyer," May 5: As the father of a varsity baseball player at Corona del Mar High School for the past two years, I can tell you firsthand that Coach John Emme is far more than a baseball coach, a fact apparently lost on the disgruntled parent who filed suit against him because he thought his son was so gifted he deserved some sort of special consideration above and beyond that given any other player. For the record, Emme has gone above and beyond the call of most coaches I have been affiliated with for the past 13 years in youth baseball.

A Newport Beach father defamed his son's high school baseball coach, an Orange County civil jury concluded Thursday, awarding the coach $700,000 in damages. The Superior Court verdicts, reached after less than six hours of deliberations, could help protect youth coaches from so-called "disappointment" lawsuits by parents who claim that coaches fail to help young athletes reach their potential.

David Beser didn't start in Corona del Mar's Southern Section Division IV baseball playoff game against West Hills Chaminade Friday at Corona del Mar, but once he got in the game, he didn't stop. Beser, benched because he was late for practice on Thursday, came off the bench to spark a 10-9 victory by the Sea Kings, who will play La Quinta Tuesday in the semifinals at a site to be determined.

Corona del Mar expects to make a run at the playoffs, and Friday the Sea Kings got off to a good start in Sea View League with a 7-2 victory over Newport Harbor. A four-run first inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Nate Lemmerman and a two-run homer by David Beser off Scott Beerer (0-2) was all the offense the Sea Kings (4-2, 1-0) needed. Lemmerman added another RBI with a sacrifice fly in the sixth and Eric Wiethorn had a two-run homer in the seventh.
