The debut album from Shovels and Rope has propelled the Charleston, S.C.-based indie folk-country duo past such stalwarts as Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell , Dwight Yoakam, Jim Lauderdale, Buddy Miller and Richard Thompson to lead the 2013 Americana Music Award nominations with four nods, including album of the year for “O' Be Joyful. " But the veterans weren't far behind, with Harris and Miller collecting three nominations apiece, both also delivering album of the year contenders, and both also in the running for artist of the year, along with Yoakam and Thompson.

The Americana Music Assn.'s annual Grammy eve show at the Troubadour has rapidly turned into a must-see event for roots-music aficionados. The phrase “and friends” rises to a whole new level when it's attached to the names of Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell, who turned their joint appearance Saturday night at the Troubadour into an all-star Grammy Awards eve celebration of the overlapping worlds of Americana music, traditional folk and progressive country. “We're going to win a Grammy just for this night,” Crowell said with a broad smile midway through the show at which he and longtime friend and connoisseur of great songwriting, Harris, were joined by Joan Baez, Bonnie Raitt, the Zac Brown Band, J.D. Souther, Damien Rice, Joan Osborne, Shannon McNally, John Fullbright and Shawn Camp.

How surprised was Blue Door Records co-owner Greg Johnson when he got word that his Oklahoma-based artist John Fullbright had been nominated for a Grammy Award for Americana album, alongside roots-music heavyweights Mumford & Sons, Bonnie Raitt, the Avett Brothers and the fast-rising Lumineers? “I don't know how any of this Grammy stuff works,” Johnson said Thursday from his office in the Oklahoma City folk club he's been running for 20 years, the Blue Door, from which the label gets its name.

The Rolling Stones have jumped aboard the already rock star-studded lineup for next week's benefit concert to raise money for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. The Stones join previously announced performers including Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, Kanye West, the Who, Roger Waters, Chris Martin, Alicia Keys, Dave Grohl and Eddie Vedder. The show, called “121212: The Concert for Sandy Relief,” will start Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time at Madison Square Garden and benefits the Robin Hood Relief Fund.

It's brunch at the Grammys! Live updates from the pre-telecast. 4:10 p.m.: Final update from the pre-show: The 70 th award this afternoon went to the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach for producer of the year. “Wow,” said Auerbach, who moments ago was on stage when the Black Keys' “El Camino” took the rock album Grammy. In addition to “El Camino,” Auerbach's production credits included the Grammy-winning Dr. John album “Locked Down.” “Thank you so much for Nonesuch for supporting these kind of projects that I love doing,” said Auerbach.

"The Day of the Doctor" (BBC America, Saturday), "The Night of the Doctor" and "The Last Day" (online, at your will), "An Adventure in Space and Time" (BBC America, Friday). "Doctor Who," the television show/British national monument about an alien gadabout who travels all of creation, from end to end and first to last, in a living blue police call box, turns 50 Saturday. It will be marked properly, not with a look back (though there have been those as well) but with an actual, brand new, extremely special episode, "The Day of the Doctor," whose particulars are being kept very secret, except for the bits that aren't.
