The telephone keeps ringing, the demand for basketball tickets to view Kansas in the NCAA tournament is overwhelming, and oh-for-the-good-old-days when all John Hadl had to do was sidestep the likes of Mean Joe Greene and Ted Hendricks. "Terrible, just terrible," said Hadl, who supervises all fund-raising activities for the Kansas athletic department. "We've come to Chicago for the tournament, and each team gets 250 tickets, and we've got 5,000 requests.

Chuck Knox will be wearing blue and gold sweaters again, but the similarities between his first and latest NFL head coaching jobs go much deeper than just the color scheme of his wardrobe. Knox made his head coaching debut with the Rams almost two decades ago. But when he starts to examine game films of the 1991 Rams, it will bring back not-so-fond memories of his first days with the team in 1973. That year, he took over a club that had a 6-7-1 record the previous season.

Quarterback Steve Young, who has been sidelined with neck and knee injuries, is expected to return to the lineup tonight when the Los Angeles Express (3-10) plays the Bulls (7-6) at Jacksonville, Fla. Kevin Nelson was added to the Express' long list of casualties last Sunday, however, leaving Coach John Hadl with only two able-bodied ball carriers--Mel Gray and Kirby Warren. So tonight, Hadl will introduce his version of the single-back, run-and-shoot offense.

Why am I a Ram fan? Roman Gabriel to Jack Snow. Why should I be a Dolphin fan? Bob Griese to Paul Warfield. Why am I a Ram fan? John Hadl to Harold Jackson. Why should I be a Cowboy fan? Roger Staubach to Drew Pearson. Why am I a Ram fan? Merlin Olsen and Fred Dryer. . . . And now why am I a Ram fan? Jim Everett to anybody. Why should I be a 49er fan? Joe Montana to anybody. Why am I a Ram fan? Someday they will win a Super Bowl. Why should I be a 49er fan? They win Super Bowls.

When asked to assess his performance Sunday, Charger quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver said, "We won; that's all I assess it on." It's not pretty, it's certainly not flashy, but has anyone noticed what Tolliver has accomplished in the past four weeks? He has completed 48 of 94 passes for 640 yards and, while that's not enough to get him into the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, Tolliver has not thrown an interception in the last four games and the Chargers have won three of those contests.
