San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh was tapped to drive the pace car for the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday. Harbaugh already has ties to IndyCar racing and Indianapolis. He's a co-owner of the Panther Racing team, which has two drivers in the 500: J.R. Hildebrand and Townsend Bell. Driving the Chevrolet Corvette to lead the 33-car field at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is "a tremendous thrill," Harbaugh said in a statement Tuesday night. Harbaugh, 49, got the racing bug attending the Indy 500 as a child.

Anquan Boldin was a key reason San Francisco lost the Super Bowl to Baltimore last month. He led the Ravens with six catches for 104 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Joe Flacco to help deal the 49ers a 34-31 loss. Someone's going to feel a bit sheepish when he faces his new teammates for the first time. In an apparent salary cap move, Boldin has been traded from the Ravens to the 49ers for a sixth-round draft pick in 2013 pending a physical, multiple sources are reporting.

John Harbaugh was hired Friday as head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, who hope their second choice proves to be a first-rate success. Harbaugh spent this season as Philadelphia's secondary coach after making a name for himself working with special teams. He has never been a head coach but has coaching in his genes -- his father, Jack, is former head coach at Western Kentucky and his brother, Jim, is head coach at Stanford and a former quarterback with the Ravens.

The Baltimore Ravens' coaching staff might be a victim of the front office's success and its ability to draft or sign good players. You never hear John Harbaugh mentioned as a possible NFL coach of the year. Brian Billick was never a serious candidate either, even though he had a good run in Baltimore from 1999 until 2008. Few of the experts expected the Ravens to win the AFC North, much less play in the Super Bowl in New Orleans. A 9-7 or 8-8 record was a more realistic possibility.

Like her Super Bowl-bound older brothers, Joani Harbaugh is fiercely competitive. When she was 7, she tried out for a part in her school play, "The Wizard of Oz. " She wanted to be Dorothy but instead landed the role of a munchkin. "I was highly, highly offended," recalled Joani, who is five years younger than her brother, Jim, 49, coach of the San Francisco 49ers, and six years younger than John, coach of the Baltimore Ravens. "I do remember that I wasn't Dorothy or Glinda. So I decided to memorize the entire play in case anybody went down with the flu or something, they could put me in there.

BALTIMORE -- The rookie head coach made all the right moves, and the first-year quarterback displayed remarkable footwork and poise in his initial NFL start. Most of all, though, the Baltimore Ravens received a typically solid performance from their defense in defeating the Cincinnati Bengals, 17-10. The Ravens (1-0) forced two turnovers and limited the Bengals (0-1) to 154 yards to make John Harbaugh a winner in his debut as an NFL coach. Cincinnati's Carson Palmer was 10 for 25 for 99 yards, and his interception ended the Bengals' deepest foray into Baltimore territory -- except for a 65-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Johnathan Joseph.

Times NFL columnist Sam Farmer and Mark Thompson (of "Mark and Brian" radio fame) talked about the weekend's conference championship games and the upcoming Super Bowl matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens. You can watch a replay of the discussion above. One topic discussed was the Harbaugh brothers, Jim and John, who are the head coaches for the two teams. As Farmer wrote earlier this week , John Harbaugh has an appreciation of history, and also a sense of perspective.

John Harbaugh was a bit sheepish about his emotional outbursts at officials in Super Bowl XLVII, but his combustible younger brother said Tuesday he didn't regret his own eruptions of emotions. "We fight to win," San Francisco Coach Jim Harbaugh said in his season-capping news conference at 49ers headquarters. "And if you're asking does my personal etiquette need to be changed, more catatonic on the sideline? I don't anticipate that happening. " Jim Harbaugh was particularly upset about a pivotal play at the end of the game, when he felt receiver Michael Crabtree was held by Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith on fourth and goal from the Baltimore five-yard line.

NEW ORLEANS -- Seeing as the NFL is a copycat league, teams naturally want to emulate the blueprint of the franchise that wins it all. So mark this down: Losing at the end of the regular season can be a good thing. That's what the champion Baltimore Ravens did, dropping four of their last five games this season before igniting in the playoffs and knocking off Indianapolis, Denver, New England and finally San Francisco in Super Bowl XLVII. And the Ravens were traveling a well-worn path.

The bite in the air tells you that it is deep into the football season. But in Baltimore, you need no such indicator. That's because the Ravens are everywhere. Hours before they beat the Miami Dolphins in a home game Sunday, this city turned purple. The Ravens' color is not so much a pigmentation as it is a symbol. This city literally wears its love for its NFL team on its sleeve. And its chest, pants, shoes, fingers and every conceivable vacant spot for wearing and draping. The Ravens beat a decent Miami Dolphins team, 26-10, and now share the best record in the NFL with four other teams at 6-2. The fever is here.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - John Harbaugh has an appreciation of history, and also a sense of perspective. So the Baltimore Ravens coach chuckled Monday at the notion that he and his brother, San Francisco 49ers Coach Jim Harbaugh, will be making history in Super Bowl XLVII when they become the first sibling coaches to face each other in a major professional sports championship. "I guess it's pretty neat," Harbaugh said. "Is it really going to be written about? It's not exactly like Churchill and Roosevelt or anything.
