He replaces John Kasser, who resigned March 4 to become associate executive director of the College Football Assn. Johnson, 39, a native of Franklin, Minn., was an assistant football coach at California from 1978-1982.

The 41st annual Catalina Ski Race, from Long Beach to Catalina Island, will be held Sunday morning. More than 100 water skiers will compete in the race, which begins at 8 a.m. between the Grissom and White oil islands and ends at Shoreline Park. Construction of California's new Haas Pavilion is behind schedule and won't be complete in time for next season's men's and women's basketball games. That means the Bears men's team will play another full season at the New Arena in Oakland, and the women will again play at Kaiser Arena in Oakland. The delay in completion of the 12,100-seat Haas Pavilion has been charged to a delay in beginning construction, according to Cal's athletic director, John Kasser.

UC Santa Barbara has received approval from the NCAA to make the move from Division III to Division II in football in the fall of 1991, Athletic Director John Kasser announced Friday. Coached by Rick Candaele, UCSB is entering its fifth year as an intercollegiate program. In four previous years, all in Division III, the Gauchos have gone 4-5, 8-2, 6-4 and 8-2. This year, in their final season as a Division III team, the Gauchos will play a schedule made up mostly of Division II opponents.

John Kasser is leaving as athletic director at Cal State Long Beach to become the associate executive director of the College Football Assn. Kasser, 49, will supervise production of college football telecasts on CBS and assist in the development of marketing and promotions for the CFA, a group of 63 colleges with major football programs. The CFA made the announcement Tuesday at its headquarters in Boulder, Colo.

More than 35 candidates have applied for the vacant Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. commissioner position, according to Ed Carroll, the Cal State Fullerton athletic director, who was in charge of accepting applications. Carroll is a member of a 12-person committee that will interview candidates and recommend a successor to Louis Cryer, who resigned last December after 10 years, to the full PCAA Council. The recommended candidate is virtually assured of being accepted.

Green Bay Packer quarterbacks coach Steve Mariucci, a former California assistant, was named the Golden Bears' new coach. Mariucci, 40, has spent four years with the Packers, helping them to two playoff appearances and a 9-5 record this season. "The last four years here with Green Bay have been a tremendous period of growth in my coaching career," said Mariucci, who agreed to a five-year contract. "But I'm ready for this new challenge."

Football at Cal State Long Beach apparently is on the verge of being saved. Extending his original deadline, Long Beach President Stephen Horn announced Tuesday that $250,000 in community donations would have to be in the bank by noon Monday in order for football to continue. He also said that there will have to be an additional $50,000 in pledges. Previously, Horn had said that $300,000 in cash--needed to pay for grant-in-aid scholarships--would have to be raised by today.
