Lord John Leonard King, the former chairman of British Airways who turned the once ailing state-owned flag carrier into a profitable publicly held airline, died Tuesday, the company said. He was 87. "He transformed the airline from a position of state-owned weakness to one of financial strength and global renown as a pioneer privatized carrier," British Airways Chairman Martin Broughton said. The company did not release the cause of death. King was named head of the airline in 1981 by then-U.K.

The head of the library system at Rutgers University in New Jersey has been chosen to take over the troubled UC Irvine library, which had been under scrutiny over allegations of poor management, bias and racism. Joanne R. Euster, an internationally known leader in library science who took over a divided and demoralized Rutgers library system in 1986, said Thursday that she has accepted the UCI post pending approval of the University of California Board of Regents.

Beverly Jean Ernst, whose twin infants died when she left them in a car for at least four hours on a hot summer day, was released on parole this week after serving less than half of her four-year prison term. "It wasn't murder; she deserves to be left alone," her mother, Mildred Ernst of Anaheim, said. "She deserves a chance at a fresh start." Ernst and her mother have refused to discuss her prison sentence, where she is staying or her plans.
