Not necessarily, according to Ivan Maisel, who says in his new book that USC-UCLA is the most overrated rivalry in college football. Maisel is a college football specialist as a senior writer at ESPN.com and his book is "The Maisel Report: College Football's Most Overrated & Underrated Players, Coaches, Teams and Traditions."

University of Illinois officials Thursday recommended defensive coordinator Lou Tepper as a new head football coach after John Mackovic resigned to coach the Texas Longhorns, sources said. Illinois plays UCLA in the John Hancock Bowl at El Paso on Dec. 31. Mackovic, 30-16-1 in four seasons at Illinois, resigned as coach and athletic director, recommending that the school promote Tepper to coach and Bob Todd from associate athletic director to athletic director.

Coach John Mackovic, who led the Kansas City Chiefs to the National Football League playoffs for the first time in 15 years, was fired Thursday after his fourth season with the team, owner Lamar Hunt announced. "The chemistry of an organization is an intangible that is crucial to its success," Hunt said. "My evaluation is that our football team is lacking that ingredient." Hunt said there would be no immediate decision on Mackovic's replacement.

Safety Brandon Nash returned a fumble 57 yards for a touchdown and Andrae Thurman blocked a punt for a safety as the Wildcats rallied from an awful start to defeat San Diego State, 23-10, on Thursday night at San Diego in the season opener for both teams. Junior quarterback Jason Johnson made his first career start and threw a touchdown pass, a four-yarder to Brandon Marshall in the third quarter.
