Before the Dodgers' historic 16-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night, Manager Don Mattingly explained what he saw as the biggest change during the team's season-best six-game win streak. Finally, the manager said, each of his players has been able to fit into his intended role, with the return of Matt Kemp, Hanley Ramirez and A.J. Ellis. Having said that, using Skip Schumaker as a pitcher probably wasn't what Mattingly had in mind. But with Peter Moylan, Matt Guerrier and Brandon League already used up - throwing a combined 94 pitchers (with minimal success)

John Mayberry, who coached Kennedy High School to the Southern Section 3-A basketball title this season, will coach the North team in the 23rd annual Orange County high school all-star boys' basketball game this June. Bill Shannon of Woodbridge, which reached the 3-A final this season, will coach the South team in the game, which will be played June 25 in the Bren Center on the campus of UC Irvine.

John Mayberry, Kennedy High School boys' basketball coach the last 18 years, resigned Friday, Athletic Director Tom Wallace said. Mayberry, 66, will remain at the school as a physical education teacher. He stepped down to concentrate on private ventures, Wallace said. Mayberry is also the president-elect of the California Assn. of Coaches. Under Mayberry, the Fighting Irish won the Southern Section 3-A title in 1988 and were Division II-A runners-up in 1992. He had a 304-166 career record.

With Kennedy High School's 82-55 Garden Grove League triumph over La Quinta Monday night, Coach John Mayberry recorded his 200th career victory. And to mark the occasion, students at the school raised banners and balloons and presented Mayberry with a cake. Mayberry raised his coaching record to 200-110 in the midst of his 13th season with another routine victory.

Kevin Rembert of Mater Dei High School has been dismissed from the North team of the Orange County High School All-Star basketball game, according to North Coach John Mayberry. "He couldn't fulfill his opportunity to be a member of the North All-Star squad," Mayberry said. "Therefore, after discussion with the directors of the game, he has been dropped from the squad for lack of participating in practices and scrimmages." Under game rules, a player must participate in 10 practices.

Let's hope the members of the Coliseum Commission read Sam Farmer's article in Friday's edition of The Times. They seem to be the only people in L.A. who just don't get it: Until they stop shoving the Coliseum down the NFL's throat, L.A. will never get an NFL team, period, end of story. Magnolia High School forward Mike Goff, who was the county's leading scorer and rebounder this season, heads the list of selections for the North team in the 23rd Orange County All-Star basketball game June 25 in UC Irvine's Bren Center. Goff averaged 28.2 points and 16.7 rebounds and set six school records for Magnolia. The North team will be coached by John Mayberry of Kennedy.

Kennedy avenged an earlier loss and moved into a first-place tie in the Garden Grove League with a 79-71 victory over Rancho Alamitos Wednesday in Garden Grove. Kennedy (7-1, 10-6) lost to Rancho Alamitos (7-1, 13-4) in the opening league game of the season Jan. 3. "This was big for us," said Kennedy Coach John Mayberry. "We're 7-0 as far as we're concerned. It was just determination and the will to win." Guard Jim Barker, who scored 33 in the first game, led Kennedy with a game-high 28 points.
