The date was not lost on Notre Dame Coach John McLeod. "For us to keep playing after St. Patrick's Day, we haven't done this in six years," MacLeod said Tuesday, after the Irish beat Texas Christian, 82-72, at South Bend, Ind., in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament. "It's exciting."

Rick Pitino was released from his contract as coach of the New York Knicks Tuesday, freeing him to become basketball coach at the University of Kentucky, which is on three-year NCAA probation. "I'm a college basketball coach and I think that's where my heart is," Pitino, 36, said at a news conference outside Madison Square Garden after a meeting with Knicks officials. "And I think that's in the best interest of everyone." Pitino ended his two-year association with the NBA team by reaching agreement on terms for the termination of his contract, the Knicks said.

A member of the U.S. Auto Club, who quite understandably prefers to remain unidentified, stopped for gas recently on his way home from a race in southern Indiana. When he got out, he noticed that the car trailer he was hauling was empty. State and local authorities searched for nearly four hours before they found the missing race car about 30 yards from the highway in a cornfield, where it had apparently rolled after coming loose from the trailer as the driver sped along unknowingly.

Someday, 8-year-old Genevieve Ireland might walk across the campus at Cal Lutheran University as a student, swim in the envisioned aquatic center, or crack open a book on sports medicine. On Sunday, however, all she was interested in studying were two petite television stars hidden behind a mob of fans. The Fields of Dreams Family Festival was a one-day event celebrating ambitious plans for expanded athletic fields and other sports facilities at the Olsen Road campus in Thousand Oaks.
