When John Miltner came to UC Irvine in 1983, he lowered the "drawbridges" surrounding the campus--and the money has been rolling in ever since. Miltner, 42, brought to UCI the fund-raising skills he had acquired as executive director for development and communications for the Boy Scouts of America and assistant vice president and director of development for Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

Former UC Irvine vice chancellor John R. Miltner, who guided UCI to new records in private fund raising before departing in 1991 to head Illinois' Millikin University, has died after undergoing cancer treatment, university officials said. He was 46. Miltner died Sunday evening at the Carle Clinic in Champaign, Ill., where he was receiving therapy for an unspecified form of skin cancer, said officials for Millikin University in Decatur, Ill.

Miltner, a UC Irvine vice chancellor for eight years, has been named president of Millikin University, a small undergraduate school in Decatur, Ill., officials at both institutions announced Monday. Miltner, 44, was selected from 121 candidates to head the 90-year-old private university affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. He succeeds Roger Miller, who is retiring after 21 years as president. Miltner begins his new job July 1.

In its continuing campaign to attract top scholars, UC Irvine has hired Harvard psychology professor R. Duncan Luce, as well as Dennis Aigner, the former chairman of the economics department of USC. They will join the Irvine faculty this fall. Aigner, credited with building USC's economics department into one of the top 20 in the nation, will serve as dean of UC Irvine's Graduate School of Management.

John Miltner, vice chancellor for university advancement at UC Irvine, was named Outstanding Professional in Philanthropy for 1988 during the National Philanthropy Day Celebration held last week in Orange County. National Philanthropy Day honors donors, founders, volunteers and professionals for their contributions to the community. A committee representing area philanthropic organizations picked the Orange County award winners. Miltner has led UCI's fund-raising efforts since 1983.

An Irvine computer products firm has pledged $250,000 to support four graduate fellows at UC Irvine, bringing the university's private fellowship fund to nearly $1 million since July. The grant by Western Digital, one of the largest in UCI history, will pay for two two-year positions in electrical and computer engineering in 1990 and two more in 1991, university officials said.

A plan by UC Irvine and Hitachi Chemical Co. to build a joint research facility on the Irvine campus was approved Thursday by a committee of the University of California Board of Regents. UCI Vice Chancellor John Miltner said the committee approval--expected to be followed today by swift approval of the full Board of Regents--gives UCI authority to lease land adjacent to its medical school complex to Hitachi Chemical.

UC Irvine and Irvine Co. officials responded Monday to two questions dealing with possible conflicts between the institutions growing out of negotiations over development of the "inclusion area." UCI Chancellor Jack Peltason said that he had looked into a corporate membership to the exclusive Big Canyon Country Club that had been assigned by the Irvine Co. to John Miltner, UCI vice chancellor for advancement and the university's lead negotiator in the inclusion area discussions.

UC Irvine has wooed two prominent scholars away from prestigious universities in the past two days, part of an effort to attract prominent professors from around the country.
