Re "Court Voids Death Sentence," Nov. 8: Why is Demetrie L. Mayfield still alive? Fifteen years after he steals a car and kills, with a shotgun, the owner of the car for calling the police and her neighbor for being a witness, why is he still breathing? He confessed the next day! There are no redeeming qualities that should keep this man alive. I don't care about his rough childhood, diabetes or drug use. What about his victims, Ora Mae Pope and John Moreno? Mayfield at least had a lawyer; unfortunately, the people he killed didn't get that option.

Redondo has jumped out to a surprising 19-0 start and earned points toward a national ranking in Baseball America's top 25. The main reason for the success is on the mound, where the Seahawks have three dominating pitchers--who own 17 of the team's 19 victories. Junior Jared Moon (5-0, 0.58 earned-run average in 42 1/3 innings), senior Andy Wagenbrenner (6-0, 0.61 ERA in 34 innings) and senior Ian Herweg (6-0, 2.03 ERA in 38 innings), lead a pitching staff that has given up 34 runs all season.

After a rough outing in his previous start, John Moreno had a bit of a problem with confidence. But Bell Coach Henry Santiago never lost faith in his sophomore pitcher Wednesday. Santiago stuck with Moreno in the Southeastern Conference game against Fremont and it proved to be the right move. The right-hander struck out 13 and drove in the winning run with the first hit of his high school career in Bell's 2-1 victory over the defending City 3-A champions at Fremont.

The name may have changed but not the results. Bell High's John Moreno-Orozco--formerly John Moreno--has emerged as the top pitcher in the Central City. Bar one, perhaps. "When I think about the best pitchers, I think about Jeff Deno," said Moreno-Orozco about his Franklin counterpart. "He is real good." Modesty aside, so is Moreno-Orozco. The 6-foot senior right-hander has been untouchable this season with a 5-0 record and 0.20 ERA.
