John Mounce came to Southern California College to learn a different way to play basketball. After playing methodical, pick-and-pass basketball through most of his career, Mounce was ready to see how the other half lived. Or at least he wanted to see how to use more than half the court. The run-and-gun, press-until-you-drop style of the Vanguards helped induce him to transfer from Azusa Pacific.

Southern California College, led by guards John Mounce and Terry Scruggs, who scored 25 and 22 points, respectively, defeated Christian Heritage, 90-77, Tuesday night at Whittier College to win the NAIA District 3 men's basketball championship. The victory advances the Vanguards (25-8) to the NAIA national tournament, starting March 13 at Kansas City. Guard Brad Soucie scored 27 points for Christian Heritage (29-6).

Tony Smith made a three-point basket with two seconds left to give California Baptist an 80-77 victory over Southern California College Tuesday night in a Golden State Athletic Conference men's basketball game at Cal Baptist. Smith finished with 17 points. John Mounce led SCC with 13 points. In other conference play: Fresno Pacific 85, Christ College Irvine 61--Brian Falls scored a game-high 22 points as Fresno Pacific won the conference opener at home.

Guard John Mounce and reserve forward John Peterson, two members of Mater Dei High School's CIF Southern Section 5-A championship team, have signed letters of intent to attend four-year colleges. Mounce, 6-feet 2-inches, signed with Azusa Pacific, an NAIA District 3 college. Mounce also played shortstop for the Monarchs' baseball team. Peterson, 6-6, signed with Pomona-Pitzer, a Division III program.

Southern California College stopped Westmont's 19-game winning streak with late free throws Saturday at SCC. Westmont (20-2, 6-1 in the Golden State Athletic Conference) led most of the first half, but Terry Scruggs' three-point shot made the score, 37-35, and SCC (16-7, 5-2) never trailed again in winning, 80-77. "We knew they were good on defense," SCC forward John Mounce said. "We just did what we do in practice and it worked."

Three basketball players, including former Mater Dei High School guard John Mounce, have signed letters of intent to attend Southern California College in the fall, Vanguard Coach Bill Reynolds said Thursday. Mounce, a 6-foot 3-inch guard, attended Asuza Pacific this past season but has transferred to SCC for his sophomore year. He will become eligible in late December. Reynolds also signed 6-3 guard Jeff deLaveaga, who averaged 28.

Bill DesRochers scored 24 points and Danny Scott 23 to lead Azusa Pacific College to a 92-87 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over Southern California College Tuesday at Azusa. Todd Dixon's 20 points led SCC (8-10, 3-2). John Mounce added 12 points for SCC. Azusa Pacific (6-14, 4-1) led by 18 at halftime (49-31). In a Golden State Athletic Conference women's game: Azusa Pacific 98, Southern California College 50--Azusa Pacific scored the first 15 points of the game at Azusa Pacific.

Southern California College lost an 11-point lead in the second half and trailed by seven before rallying to defeat Menlo College, 90-84, in the Occidental College men's basketball tournament Friday at Eagle Rock. John Mounce had 22 points and Jeff Bickmore and Rick Witmer each had 19 to lead SCC (8-5). Menlo is 10-2. In nonconference men's basketball: Simon Fraser (Can.) 100, Christ College Irvine 85-- Andrew Steinfeldt scored 32 points for Simon Fraser (6-13).

Southern California College withstood two last-second shots and went on to defeat Heritage Christian, 93-91, in an NAIA District III men's basketball playoff game Tuesday in Costa Mesa. John Mounce missed a free-throw attempt with 10 seconds left, but Heritage Christian missed a shot. As time appeared to run out, the ball went out of bounds off an SCC player. But the buzzer never sounded and the officials put one second back. Heritage Christian inbounded the ball but missed another shot.
