It might be early in the season but John Price, coach of the Cal State Northridge volleyball team, has not even remotely tried to downplay the significance of the Matadors' Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match against UCLA tonight at Pauley Pavilion. "It's giant. Gigantic. Whatever bigger than gigantic is. Huge," Price said. It also could be historic. Northridge has not defeated UCLA in 18 regular-season and postseason matches dating to 1982.

The Cal State Northridge men's volleyball team that will take the court today in the UC Santa Barbara tournament is remarkably similar to the one that pushed USC, the eventual national champion, to the last possible point before losing in the semifinals of the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. tournament last year. There are two notable exceptions. One is at setter, where redshirt sophomore Matt Unger has beaten out incumbent Gary Reznick.

Cal State Northridge men's volleyball Coach John Price will interview for the women's coaching job at Cal State Bakersfield today. Price, whose team was eliminated June 11 for budget and gender-equity reasons, said he is taking a wait-and-see approach to recent news that the program may be restored by a legislative bailout. "Unless they can assure me that men's volleyball will be here for more than a year, I've got to pursue other options," Price said.

John Price learned from the experience. In 1991, on his first U.S. Olympic Festival men's volleyball coaching assignment, Price brought along videotape. He was a coach with a plan. But his team finished fourth. In other words, last. So this time around, Price chucked the strategy. No blocking patterns. No fancy offensive tactics. His practices have been heavy on repetition, his off hours full of fun. And his team, the North, has responded.

John Price, men's volleyball coach at Cal State Northridge, and his assistant, Jeff Campbell, were granted an extension until Friday to accept severance pay offers from the university. Price and Campbell received the extension from last Thursday's noon deadline after they asked Northridge administrators for more time to consult with faculty union representatives. John Price is a guy with a burden. He soon might be a guy without a job. If Cal State Northridge drops volleyball and several other men's sports within the next few days, as expected, Price becomes obsolete after coaching the Matadors for 12 seasons. Price understands the school's predicament. Northridge must make the cuts for financial reasons and to meet state gender equity laws. There are virtually no other options.
