Rep. William E. Dannemeyer, one of the nation's most conservative members of Congress, said he will formally open his quest today for the U.S. Senate seat held by fellow Republican John Seymour. His official announcement--which Dannemeyer said will be made at press conferences today in Redding, Sacramento, Fresno and Burbank--amounts to an intraparty declaration of war against Seymour and sets up a 1992 contest between the conservative and moderate wings of the state Republican Party.

California Democratic Senate candidates Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer enjoy a substantial fund-raising advantage over their Republican opponents with 18 days to go in the campaign, according to reports released Thursday. Each candidate had about $1.4 million in her campaign treasury as of Sept. 30. This compared to $462,732 for Feinstein's opponent, Sen. John Seymour, and $207,642 for Boxer's opponent, former television commentator Bruce Herschensohn.

Unable to agree on a face-to-face debate, Republican U.S. Sen. John Seymour and Democratic opponent Dianne Feinstein took cross-city potshots at each other Friday, disagreeing over crime, debates and support of women as they competed for votes in conservative Orange County. Seymour, seeking to protect his home-county base and undermine Feinstein, went after his opponent with his strongest attack yet.

Fortunately, other citizens of Irvine as well as Mayor Larry Agran (July 10) are able to see the hypocrisy in using pseudopatriotism and religion to hide an inability to deal with problems or mask bigotry. That's why the citizens have always elected Agran by such overwhelming margins. We have found that few local issues are solved by Republican or Democratic solutions. In Irvine, with a City Council that listens to the community and solves problems with a pragmatic approach, we feel we are retaining a high quality of life, a safe environment for our children and protecting the value of our homes.

Competing U.S. Senate candidates John Seymour and Dianne Feinstein will stump in Orange County today during a series of speaking appearances. Feinstein, a Democrat and former San Francisco mayor, will travel to two cities to give speeches before ending the day with a fund-raiser, said assistant campaign manager Gail Gordon. Republican Sen. Seymour, meanwhile, is scheduled to receive formal endorsements from two statewide law-enforcement groups.

The three Republican candidates for the two-year Senate seat held by GOP Sen. John Seymour have agreed to participate in a half-hour television debate in San Diego on May 17, according to debate organizer Peter Kaye. Attempts are being made to air three other debates on Sunday evenings in May involving the Democratic candidates for the Seymour seat and the Republican and Democratic contenders for the six-year seat held by Democrat Alan Cranston, Kaye said.

The 20-year-old son of state Sen. John Seymour (R-Anaheim) pleaded guilty Monday to a charge of disturbing the peace, which stemmed from his arrest last month at a Hollywood hotel. After entering his plea, Jeffrey Seymour was ordered by Hollywood Municipal Judge Sandy Kriegler to spend five days in Los Angeles County Jail or pay a $150 fine, and he was placed on two years' summary probation. Seymour received an extension until Dec. 14 to pay the fine. Also, he is scheduled to appear at a Dec.
