It should come as no surprise, but probably will, to the artsy-smartsy View readers who have an abiding disdain for Lt. North, a retired U.S. Marine colonel, that such a man would devote "14 hours a day, five or six days a week . . . and is doing something for us somewhere, every day" according to John Staggers of the Alliance to Save America's Future (SAFE). This kind of work is tailor-made for North; after all, he has fought his country's battles before with dedication and honor.

The improper recruitment of former Crenshaw High School basketball star John Staggers was cited by the NCAA Tuesday in a report placing the University of Texas El Paso on three years of probation. The finding by the NCAA marks the second time that a school has been sanctioned as a result of dealings with Staggers, the Los Angeles City 4-A player of the year in 1988. Salt Lake Community College was placed on probation by the National Junior College Athletic Assn.

A yearlong NCAA investigation into Texas El Paso's basketball program has resulted in allegations of 13 violations, including some that involve former Crenshaw High star John Staggers, university officials announced Tuesday. The NCAA opened an investigation into El Paso's program in December of 1989 after articles in The Times and Newsday outlined improprieties.

Is that the same John Staggers who failed to graduate from Crenshaw? How is he eligible in Salt Lake City?

Basketball coach Don Haskins of Texas El Paso has angrily denied allegations by a former recruit that UTEP coaches gave the player money, housing and transportation. The Los Angeles Times reported Saturday that John Staggers, a former Crenshaw High star, had told the NCAA that he received such favors in 1988. The NCAA has been investigating UTEP's basketball program for six months.

Chris Mills scored a game-high 43 points to lead Fairfax to a 107-71 win over Crenshaw Friday night in the championship semifinals of the St. Monica tournament. The victory put Fairfax, The Times' No. 1-ranked City team, in tonight's final, which starts at 8. Crenshaw, ranked No. 2 in the City, controlled the early tempo of the game and jumped to a 16-7 lead with John Staggers hitting three straight shots.

Texas El Paso said it found no widespread wrongdoing in its basketball program after investigating 13 rules violations alleged by the NCAA. However, the university acknowledged breaking some rules, including an assistant coach helping former Crenshaw High standout John Staggers prepare for his General Equivalency Diploma exam. The school has a hearing tentatively scheduled Sept. 27 before the NCAA's Committee on Infractions.
