John Swaino thought he had a firm grip on things. He could hold serve and he could hold a beer can and there wasn't a classroom on the Savanna High School campus big enough to hold him. Swaino was never much for multiple-choice quizzes, but there was one he aced every time. It was a question of style, of life style, and at age 17, Swaino's options were these: a) Reading, writing and arithmetic. b) The beach, the pool, the keg, the tennis court. Call it a no-brainer. Swaino did.

John Swaino of Cypress College defeated Adrian Pina of Cerritos, 6-0, 2-6, 6-2, to advance to the round of 16 in the Southern California community college men's tennis championships Friday at College of the Desert. Swaino and partner Bob Carlton also won in doubles, 6-2, 6-2. Swaino won the Orange Empire Conference singles title and paired with Carlton to win the doubles title last weekend. Saddleback also had two singles players advance to the round of 16.

Saddleback College won the team title and doubles title and Cypress' John Swaino won the singles title Sunday at the Southern California Regional men's tennis tournament at College of the Desert. Saddleback finished with 19 points, followed by Santa Barbara (12) and Cypress (11). Swaino, who won the Orange Empire Conference title last week, defeated Santa Barbara's John Fox, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2, to take the singles championship.

The Cypress College men's tennis team won five of the six singles matches to wrap up a 5-4 Orange Empire Conference victory over Riverside Thursday at Cypress. John Swaino won the No. 1 singles match over Mike Bennett, 6-3, 6-2, to lead Cypress (4-7 overall, 3-3 in conference play). In other Orange Empire Conference tennis: Saddleback 9, Rancho Santiago 0--Ed Peregrino of Saddleback defeated Khien Dao of Rancho Santiago at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, to lead the Gauchos.

Carl Hinds won the singles championship and teamed with Stan Sanders to win the doubles title, leading Saddleback College to the state community college men's team tennis championship Sunday at Santa Barbara. Saddleback finished with eight points. Santa Barbara and West Valley tied for second with five points. Saddleback, which won the dual-match team competition Friday and finished 24-0, has won either the dual match or team title three years in a row.

Gina Garcia of Orange Coast, the top-seeded singles player, won twice to advance to the semifinals of the Orange Empire Conference women's tennis championships Friday at Cypress. Garcia won, 6-0, 6-0, in the third round and 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and will play Cyndi Laird of Golden West at 9 a.m. Second-seeded Noelle Schmidt of Saddleback plays No. 3 Iliana Adane of OCC in the other semifinal, also at 9 a.m.

Orange Coast College, aided by two errors and a walk, scored in the first inning for a 1-0 victory over Golden West in a Southern California Regional softball playoff game Saturday at OCC. Kristin Heizer pitched a one-hitter to get the victory for OCC (33-11). Golden West's only hit was a single in the fourth by Sheri Williams. Pam Fogg pitched a three-hitter for Golden West. The teams play today at noon in the second of their best-of-three series at OCC.

Tom Thobe threw a six-hit shutout and Joe Aversa had two hits and three RBIs to lead Golden West College to a 6-0 victory over Pasadena in the opening game of the South Coast Conference baseball season at Golden West. Thobe improved to 4-1 for Golden West (10-6, 1-0). Pasadena is 0-1, 5-9. In another South Coast Conference baseball game: El Camino 5, Fullerton 4--El Camino rallied for four runs in the ninth at home. David Wackerman (1-1) took the loss in relief for Fullerton (14-3-1, 0-1).

There were no upsets in the first day of the Orange Empire Conference men's individual tennis championships Thursday at Fullerton. Top-seeded John Swaino of Cypress defeated Larry Casa of Golden West, 6-0, 6-0. Andy Stewart of Golden West, the second-seeded player, defeated Scott Clark of Saddleback, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Carl Hinds, the third seed from Saddleback, defeated Dave Moore of Orange Coast, 6-4, 6-2, and fourth-seeded Ilkyung Choi of OCC beat Mike Munoz of Riverside, 6-1, 6-0.

Josh Bammer singled in a run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Golden West College a 4-3 victory over Rancho Santiago in an Orange Empire Conference baseball game Thursday at Golden West. Bammer's single scored Mark McGrann, who with two outs reached base on a catcher's interference and moved to second on a single by Gerad Cawhorn. Golden West is 13-2, 5-1; Rancho Santiago is 13-3 and 4-2.
