I know you've got to be tired," the minister said to a dozen players on the Los Angeles Dodgers, a team fighting to wrap up the National League's Western Division title. Commiserating with the players in an auxiliary locker room inside Dodger Stadium was the Rev. John Werhas, who briefly played with the Dodgers himself in the mid-1960s.

Eveyln Ashford, the 1984 Olympic women's 100-meter gold medalist, heads a list of four athletes who will be inducted as members of the San Pedro Sportswalk Nov. 3. Others to be honored will be Shirley Muldowney, drag racer; Jamaal Wilkes, former Laker and UCLA basketball player, and John Werhas, former USC basketball and baseball player.

John Werhas, senior pastor of Friends Christian Church in Yorba Linda, will be the keynote speaker at the city's second annual Mayor's Prayer Breakfast, Tustin Community Foundation members said recently. Friday's breakfast starts at 7 a.m. at the Tustin Area Senior Center, 200 S. C St. Werhas played baseball and basketball at USC. He went on to play for the Los Angeles Dodgers, California Angels and San Diego Padres before developing a full-time ministry with his wife, Kay, in 1974.

In the Canyon tournament consolation: Bellflower 66, Magnolia 50--Shaw Tyler scored 22 points to lead Bellflower to a third-place victory over Magnolia. Servite 67, Cerritos 55--David Downs scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Servite (4-6) to fifth place. Australia Nunawading A 70, Canyon 55--John Werhas scored 26 points and Tony Pappas had 18 for Canyon (8-6). Travis O'Sullivan had 16 points for Nunawading.

It was with a good deal of shock and regret that I read your Aug. 17 article "A Glitzy Spin to a Gentle Faith." As a "closet Quaker" for my entire adult life, I was unaware that a major branch of arguably the most Christian denomination in America has sold out to popularity, commercialism and political conservatism. To me Quakerism is a lot like wilderness: You might not dwell in its serenity on a regular basis, but knowing that it exists is a source of constant joy. The Society of Friends (Quakers)

The Dodgers of 1963 and 1965, who won titles with excellent pitching and sound defense, will be saluted in a three-inning old-timers' game today at 12:05 p.m., before the game between the Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs. More than 30 members of those championship teams will be in attendance, including Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax, who won the Cy Young Award in the National League both years.
