The CFDA awards smiled on American designing sisters Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen on Monday night in New York. The Olsen twins were named 2012 womenswear designers of the year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America for their label the Row, notching a serious validation for two Hollywood expats striving for legitimacy in the fiercely competitive fashion world. Rocking a new brunet 'do, Mary-Kate cut a gothic figure with sunny sister Ashley at New York's Lincoln Center, alongside attendees including Jessica Chastain, Anna Wintour, Zosia Mamet, Diane Von Furstenberg and host Seth Meyers.

The clean, crisp modern lines of "Tron" have been replaced by the chaotic, rose-colored acid trip of "Alice in Wonderland," but outside of an extensive cosmetic makeover, little has changed now that Disney California Adventure has rethemed its nightly dance party from ElecTRONica   to the Mad T Party. Even an A-list star like Johnny Depp was no match for"The Avengers" at the box office this past weekend, as the superhero adventure dominated ticket sales yet again and flew past $1 billion worldwide. After its $207.4-million debut broke the record for the biggest opening - not adjusting for inflation - "The Avengers" raked in an additional $103.2 million in its second weekend of domestic release, according to an estimate from distributor Walt Disney Pictures. The film featuring Marvel comic book characters such as the Hulk, Iron Man and Thor sucked the life out"Dark Shadows," leaving Depp's vampire comedy looking pallid with a lackluster $28.8-million start.

"Dark Shadows,"which hit theaters on Friday, not only revives long-dormant vampire Barnabas Collins, it also brings back some giggle- and cringe-inducing fashions of the early 1970s. Leisure suits. Mirrored aviator sunglasses. Bell-bottoms, chunky sweaters, macramé jewelry. These all contrast with the stand-up collars, cravats and capes worn by Johnny Depp as Collins. Costume designer Colleen Atwood was more than up to the challenge after numerous previous collaborations with director Tim Burton (her efforts for the director's"Alice in Wonderland" earned her a 2010 Academy Award)

"The Avengers"will take a big bite out of the opening of"Dark Shadows,"as the superhero blockbuster is set to dominate the box office for the second consecutive weekend. After launching with a record-breaking $207.4 million - the biggest opening weekend ever, not adjusting for inflation - "The Avengers" isn't likely to lose steam at the box office any time soon. In its second weekend, the film featuring beloved comic book characters such as Iron Man, Captain America and the Hulk is expected to collect an additional $90 million, according to those who have seen pre-release audience surveys.

They don't call it "Tim Burton's Dark Shadows," but they might as well have. Nominally based on the cult favorite 1960s daytime soap opera, this film has much more to do with what goes on inside director Tim Burton's head than with any TV show, no matter how beloved. In fact, "Dark Shadows" is as good an example as any of what might be called the Way of Tim, a style of making films that, like the drinking of blood, is very much an acquired taste and, unless you're a vampire, not worth the effort.

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton are longtime collaborators, having worked on eight films together. Their latest,"Dark Shadows," follows in the quirky, comedic vein of many of their movies, with Depp starring as an 18th century vampire awakened in 1972. Because of their familiarity with one another, the eccentric filmmaker and actor sometimes appeared to be in their own world on set. "You can kind of tell that they seem to have a shorthand," Depp's costar Jackie Earle Haley said at the film's premiere in Hollywood on Monday evening.

It's been a long time since wearing sunglasses was just about shading the eyes from the glare of the sun. Just as often, that pair of Wayfarers, cat-eyes or aviators is used to create an air of inaccessibility and mystery. That's especially true among the celebrity set seeking a disguise and rock musicians trying to cultivate an anti-establishment vibe behind impenetrably inky or mirrored lenses. But, thanks to the latest celebri-trend - custom-made, lightly tinted lenses in light neutrals or pale pops of color - sunglasses are no longer an accessory that looks cool at the beach or behind the wheel but affected indoors and elsewhere.

Jonah Hill seemed entirely serious and a bit panicked as a rather unusual lawbreaker advanced toward him, ignoring profanity-laden orders to halt. With a prop gun wavering in his hand, Hill implored the perpetrator to think of his family and warned that he wouldn't hesitate to shoot. But the little white duck waddling through Lafreniere Park barely acknowledged the human in a bicycle cop's summer uniform of navy blue shirt-sleeves and shorts. It just continued to make its way toward the pond in the center of the park as the "21 Jump Street" crew stifled its laughter until the film's directors, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, could call an end to the silliness.
