Anything positive always seems to be offset by a negative for the Clippers, and that proved to be true Thursday. The good news was after going most of the off-season scanning the market for a point guard, the Clippers acquired veteran Eric Murdock in a trade from the New Jersey Nets for forward Johnny Newman. Of course, there was bad news too.

Some were suggesting that with the acquisition of Kiki Vandeweghe, Johnny Newman would be replaced as starting small forward for the New York Knicks. Such talk, however, did not bother Newman, a third-year forward from Richmond, Va. He continued to play a major role in the Knicks' resurgence. His playing time was reduced a bit when Vandeweghe joined the team. But in the last two games, Newman has been instrumental in New York's success.

The New York tabloids have resurrected a catchy phrase to describe the suddenly slumping New York Knicks, a nickname previously reserved primarily for the New York Yankees: "Team Turmoil." It is a nickname that seems to fit. After the Knicks' 10-point loss to the New Jersey Nets Friday night, Coach Rick Pitino strongly criticized his players and promised changes. The Knicks, who still lead the Atlantic Division by 6 1/2 games over the second-place Philadelphia 76ers, lost eight of 13 games and were entangled in a net of inner-conflicts.

He looked so tired. Oh, Michael Jordan was so exhausted, he unloaded 47 points on the New York Knicks Sunday, and the Chicago Bulls rode his electric performance to a 106-93 victory at Chicago Stadium Sunday, giving the Bulls a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven National Basketball Assn. Eastern Conference semifinal series. Jordan came into the game with a pulled groin that was supposed to limit his movement. If others could be so afflicted. He had 18 points in the fourth quarter, and 13 of Chicago's last 17, at the point in the game when the Knicks figured he was supposed to be tired from the 39 minutes he logged in Saturday's Chicago victory.

The NBA will not vote Tuesday on the Hornets' request to move from Charlotte, N.C., to New Orleans. The league has a board of governors meeting that day and it was believed the vote would be held then, but a league spokesman said the board does not have to make its recommendation until May 17. Commissioner David Stern and members of the relocation committee visited New Orleans last month and pronounced the arena ready for the NBA.
