It took a couple of decades for Johnny Polanco's lifelong dream to become a reality, but persistence finally paid off. In 1998, music became his full-time occupation. "A few months from now, I'll be celebrating 30 years in music. I've been playing since I was 15," he said during a recent interview at Studio City's Sportsmen's Lodge, where he will appear next Friday. Today, Polanco's Conjunto Amistad ("Friendship") is one of the busiest names in the burgeoning Los Angeles salsa scene.

One Saturday last month, salsa singer Herman Olivera performed at New York's Madison Square Garden as the lead vocalist with legendary bandleader Eddie Palmieri. Two days later, Olivera was back at his job as a clerk, helping out customers in the telecommunications firm where he works during the day. "Sometimes people come into the office and stay there, just looking at me," he said recently. "Then they'll ask me: 'Do you have a brother who sings?'

A moment before pianist Wayne Gorbea and his eight-piece combo Salsa Picante unleashed their old-school salsa Friday at the Sportsmen's Lodge, Los Angeles bandleader Johnny Polanco climbed onstage and gave his New York colleague a heartfelt hug. Polanco's show of affection was understandable, considering that both men are fighters in the same crusade.
