In a scientific first that researchers are terming a "significant milestone," European physicists have produced unusually large amounts of energy in a controlled fusion reaction and sustained the reaction far longer than has previously been possible. The feat, accomplished over the weekend, has been hailed as a major step toward an unlimited source of clean energy, but researchers cautioned that it will still be decades before commercial fusion power plants are constructed.
