This column will be devoted almost entirely to the Atlantic Coast Conference. The ACC earned the clear-out space in advance of Saturday night's enticing matchup of No. 10 Clemson at No. 4 Florida State. ABC trotted its "A" team to Tallahassee and ESPN dressed Lee Corso up in a headdress and war paint (seriously) and then had him plant a pregame spear in a patch of grass. The ACC is entitled to close-up examination after so many years of pundits' harping on the fact the league is only 2-13 in BCS bowls.

UCLA receiver Taylor Embree said he would give his father, Jon Embree , Colorado's coach, a week to recover from Saturday's 45-6 rout by the Bruins. "I'll start talking trash after the USC game," Taylor Embree said. Jon Embree was in the unusual position of coaching against his son on UCLA's Senior Day. He met with Taylor Embree outside the UCLA locker room before the game. "He said, 'Good luck. Play fast; play physical,'" Taylor Embree said. "I told him, 'Good luck' too. " Said Jon Embree: "I'm just glad it was a one-time deal.

A year ago, Colorado was ranked last in thePac-12 preseason rankings. Its first year in the newly formed “power conference” under first-year head coach Jon Embree followed that script, with the Buffalos (3-10) finishing 12th. With 28 seniors moving on, including six starters on offense and five on defense, Colorado will have its work cut out for itself. Nick Hirschman is the new starting quarterback and Paul Richardson returns as one of the leading receivers in the conference.

Colorado Coach Jon Embree said he delivered this warning to his team in the run-up to its game against No. 7 Stanford on Saturday: "For those who will not get an opportunity to play professional football, you will get an opportunity to see what it's like going against Peyton Manning . " That was his way of lauding Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck , but it might not be too far from the truth. Luck certainly looked Manning-esque while calling his own plays during stretches of five of the Cardinal's 11 possessions during a 45-19 victory over UCLA.

Every year we must explain to students the "Five Ws" of college football turnover. Who? What? Went where? Why? Things don't stay the same very long. Players cycle out every four years and, for coaches, the grass is usually greener anywhere the green involves money. A look at some new faces in new places: Norm Chow, the longtime offensive coordinator, has left UCLA for Utah, his alma mater. Chow will be back in town Sept. 10 to face USC, another former employer.

If UCLA is to establish ball control on offense and develop the short- and medium-range passing game the Bruins hope will keep the chains moving, it must get a strong performance from its young offensive line and some protection help from the running backs today against Colorado. "They like to blitz a lot, and we have to pick that up," quarterback Matt Moore said. "And once we do that, we need to complete passes. If we can complete passes behind their blitz, it will have to slow them down a bit."

The Pacific 10 (now 12) Conference is proud to welcome two new lodge members. One program is disheveled, walks with a limp and wears its shirt tail out — the other is Utah. One is a model of efficiency, efficacy and proficiency — and the other is Colorado. Did the Pac-12 get better or get buffaloed? At face, it's not even close. Utah brings cornerstone credibility. Shoot, since 2003, Utah has a 7-3 record against its new conference comrades. The Utes flexed undefeated teams in 2004 and 2008, produced a No. 1 NFL pick in quarterback Alex Smith and a coach, Urban Meyer, who later won two national titles at Florida.

Jon Embree's first thought was about his Colorado team. The second thought: what a great father he had been. Colorado's 17-14 victory over Utah on Friday ended the Buffaloes' 24-game losing streak outside its home state. And it also put Embree's son, Taylor , in the Pac-12 Conference championship game. UCLA, which starts Taylor at wide receiver, was handed a spot in the title game as the South Division representative when the Utes missed a last-second field-goal try against Colorado.

Colorado Coach Jon Embree is certain about one thing when he faces UCLA on Saturday. " Rick Neuheisel wants to beat Jon Embree's behind in anything we do," Embree said. Neuheisel and Embree were assistants at Colorado together, starting in 1994. Neuheisel even spent a month living with the Embrees. The competitive relationship "goes back to doing hoops when he was here as an assistant," Embree said. "I don't expect it to change. " Neuheisel said he was on his best behavior while living at the Embree house.

Taylor Embree knows Saturday will be "weird. " The UCLA wide receiver and his father talk before every game, a ritual in the four years Taylor has played for the Bruins. Sometimes Taylor is at the team's hotel, other times on the bus headed toward the stadium. Saturday, they won't need a phone. They'll meet in person in the tunnel at the Rose Bowl. It is UCLA's Senior Day and Jon Embree, Colorado's head football coach, will be minutes away from trying to ruin his son's last home game.
