There was no red carpet, no crush of paparazzi and no fans who had camped out to catch a glimpse of the honorees at the 1997 Southern California Software Industry Awards on Thursday night. To the 200 attendees of the event at the tony Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Marina del Rey, that could have been just one more sign that technology in Silicon Valley's southern neighbor doesn't get the respect it deserves.

GoldMine Software Corp., the Pacific Palisades software developer, will announce today it has reached a deal to be acquired by a Colorado software company for $83 million in cash and stock, the companies said Sunday. Bendata Inc. of Colorado Springs, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ixchange Technology Holdings, a public company based in South Africa, will buy all of privately held GoldMine's outstanding shares, about 10 million. No debt assumption is involved, they said.

But make no mistake--this is a serious software company. GoldMine helped launch the market for work-group contact management software, which allows sales teams to automate, coordinate and improve their efforts.
