The local digerati are playing the name game again. First, there was the Los Angeles New Media Roundtable, the industry networking group best known by its quasi-acronym LAwNMoweR. Then Mayor Richard Riordan started a round table of his own. His group, convened to burnish the city's image as a leader in entertainment technology, inherited the lengthy Los Angeles New Media Roundtable appellation from LAwNMoweR. The first act of the mayor's round table was to christen Los Angeles the Digital Coast.

Silicon Valley Bank of Santa Clara, which became one of the nation's most profitable banks by focusing on high-tech companies, is preparing to open a loan production office next month in West Los Angeles. Silicon Valley Bank, with assets of about $2 billion, already has operations in Orange County, specializing in technology and life sciences lending.

Today, entrepreneurs from 21 start-up firms will make their pitches for financing to a group of venture capitalists and top private and corporate firms at the fifth annual Southern California Technology Venture Forum. "This is the best crop of companies I've ever seen here," Jon P. Goodman, director of USC's entrepreneur program EC2 Incubator Project, told The Times.

No one in Southern California is singing "Happy Days Are Here Again," but there are signs the recession may finally be leveling off and the local economy may be on the way to recovery. The February unemployment rate in L.A. County, by the best estimates, dropped to 9.7% from 11% in January and the state gained 9,500 jobs. Still, the state reportedly has lost as many as 800,000 jobs since mid-1990. No one can predict when, or if, the state will ever return to its boom days.

American business executives got a sobering warning Thursday at a Thousand Oaks conference on the dawning of the computer-driven Information Age: adapt or die. U.S. companies, the conferees urged, must quickly master worldwide information networks such as the computer-based Internet or risk being left behind by savvier domestic and foreign competitors. "We're in the midst of a transformation," economist Michael Rothschild told the audience of about 75 at the Civic Arts Plaza.
