It seems like a lifetime ago that America bid farewell to Kate Gosselin and her brood of eight kids, but it's been just three years since the final episode of "Kate Plus 8" aired on TLC. Time for a reunion! That's not to say the divorced Gosselin is planning to meet back up with ex-husband Jon, but viewers will finally be reunited with the reality TV mom we all wanted to hate. TLC has announced plans for a new one-hour special of "Kate Plus 8," set to air sometime in 2014. The special will bring fans up to speed with what Kate and her eight children have been up to since the series went off the air. Jon, however, won't be at the party.

TLC says the return of new episodes of "Jon & Kate Plus 8" delivered a robust audience on Monday night. But it was nothing like the crowd of 10.6 million viewers who tuned in on June 22 when the Gosselins revealed their decision to separate. For Monday's back-to-back half-hours, "Jon & Kate" drew 4 million and 4.2 million viewers, TLC said. After its six-week hiatus, the reality series has resumed its focus on documenting everyday activities with the estranged couple's eight kids -- 5-year-old sextuplets and 8-year-old twins.

Jon Gosselin has a whole different outlook on life these days. Instead of "Jon & Kate Plus 8," it's more like Jon plus a table for eight - he's working as a waiter and living in what sounds like a rustic cabin in Pennsylvania. In an interview Wednesday with " Entertainment Tonight ," he talked about his new reality, which doesn't include TV or the Internet at home. The former reality TV star was something of a party boy after his messy divorce from Kate Gosselin, hitting Vegas, New York and elsewhere, but those contracted, money-making appearances faded away, he said, once "Jon & Kate" was off the air and he stopped making tabloid headlines.

"Heaven and hell" is how Eileen O'Neill describes her first year at the helm of TLC, the cable network that is home to the controversial hit reality show "Jon & Kate Plus 8." "Heaven" is TLC's spectacular growth over the last 12 months, with its prime-time audience leaping 43% and now pulling in an average of more than 1 million viewers every night.

This week has provided another strange chapter in the saga of Kate Gosselin. The reality star mom from "Jon & Kate Plus 8" was accused in court by her estranged husband of withholding $33,000 from their joint bank account. Then, in a taped segment on Monday's episode of the show -- which is ending its run next month in the wake of the couple's increasingly nasty divorce -- Kate entertained the idea of becoming a cartoon character. That same night, she was holed up at Maria Shriver's Women's Conference in Long Beach, signing books for fans as security officials shooed away photographers who dared approach.

Balloon Boy, the White House party crashers, Octomom, Jon & Kate, Speidi -- nearly 10 years after the first "Survivor" offered us winner and dubious role model Richard Hatch, reality television remains the genre that just keeps on giving. Ten years ago, who among us could have imagined a nation riveted by the semi-scripted rantings of various "real" housewives or the emotional and physical exertions of the morbidly obese? (P.T. Barnum being already dead and all.) Certainly, as a concept, reality programming offers the possibility, and rare actuality, of personal drama and cultural revelation.

Reporting from Fort Collins, Colo., and Los Angeles -- The strange case of Falcon Heene took another twist Sunday when a Colorado sheriff said the boy's parents had staged the runaway balloon saga as a publicity stunt to score a reality television show. "There is absolutely no doubt in our minds that this was a hoax," Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden said at a news conference in Fort Collins. Richard and Mayumi Heene planned the caper for at least two weeks, he said, and are likely to face felony charges.

The battle between reality show stars Jon and Kate Gosselin ratcheted up another notch Thursday with the news that TLC temporarily suspended filming the couple's eight children after receiving a cease-and-desist letter from Jon's attorney. Earlier this week, TLC announced that the "Jon & Kate Plus 8" series was being renamed simply "Kate Plus 8" to accommodate the couple's recent split. The revamped program, set to premiere Nov. 2, would focus largely on Kate's role as a single mother, with Jon appearing occasionally.

Listening to Kate Gosselin stutter and sniff her way through her recent chats with "Today's" Meredith Vieira, it was hard to keep a straight face. Kate doesn't blame the decision to participate in TLC's "Jon & Kate Plus 8" for the disintegration of her marriage; it probably would have happened anyway. Really? Your husband would have left you for a Star reporter and/or the daughter of the plastic surgeon who gave you a tummy tuck (free, because it was filmed), even if you had just remained some obscure church-going Pennsylvania family with a bunch of kids?
