When Helen Wilson ran first in a City Council election three years ago, there was no cause for celebration. Voters had elected her but at the same time overwhelmingly rejected the proposed city of Saddleback Valley. Wilson is now a candidate for the proposed City Council in El Toro, and although she insists that she is not taking anything for granted, many consider it a virtual certainty that she will take office.

Pitcher Jon Smith has never lost a game in two seasons with the Titans. The bad news is that he hasn't been available to pitch nearly as often as either he or the Titan coaches would have preferred. For the second year in a row, Smith's promising career was blunted by soreness in his arm and shoulder. A year ago, Smith, a sophomore left-hander, missed two months of the season but was 2-0 with a 3.21 earned-run average when he pitched.

Donny Jamieson, who graduated from El Dorado High, was the winning pitcher when Harvard tied a 25-year school record with its 35th victory of the season Friday. But it could easily have been different. Jamieson, pitching in relief against Nicholls State in the South II Regional, gave up a double to Brandon Vasconcellos in the bottom of the 10th that cut Harvard's lead to one, and the drive narrowly missed being a home run.

Cal State Fullerton capped a three-game sweep of Nevada Las Vegas Sunday with what Coach George Horton called "the most complete game we've played." But what's not to like about a 19-0 victory? The Titans got a sparkling two-hit pitching effort through seven innings from junior Jon Smith, hammered out 21 hits and played flawlessly on defense. "This is a game we can build on," Horton said.

Cal State Fullerton needs a victory to stay alive in its NCAA baseball super-regional today against Ohio State, but that might be a lot to ask from a pitcher who hasn't pitched more than two innings in a game since April 10. Titan Coach George Horton is hopeful, however, that Jon Smith (6-0) can help keep the Titans going in the best-of-three series against the Buckeyes.
